Bye Bye voice coils...

Just feeling sickly upset that i just spent alot of wasted time and munnies installing a new system just to see (and smell) my subwoofers melt...

(2x) Audiobahn AW1206T 12" Dual 4 OHM Subs rated at 1100 Watts RMS

(1x) Power Acoustik A3000DB Mono Amp rated at 3000 Watts RMS

I wired the system in Parallel.. just as the manual listed for taking a 1 Ohm load to two 4 Ohm speakers. They played for a little while but i smelled something burning. When i had pulled the subs from my box it was too late.. the voice coils were melted and smoking. The terminal wires were black and cindered. Both subs seemed to blow like that simultaneously. Now the only sound i can make them play is a rather unpleasant crunching melody when i push them in and out. Needless to say im rather reluctant to replace the subwoofers until i can trace the source of the problem. I could really use some direction on where to troubleshoot from here.

Any help/advice would be GREATLY appreciated..

Thanks in advance

I'm sorry to hear that, man.

If you wired them correctly, then it must have been your gains.

Lets see if Im understanding...

speakers: 1100+1100=2200 RMS

Amp: 3000 RMS

Diff of 800 RMS

Without properly set gains = Gee I wonder.

Oh and AudiochromemakesmelouderthanyoucausIhavebling

Oh yea and... Welcome to the forum.

Me??? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eyebrow.gif.fe2c18d8720fe8c7eaed347b21ea05a5.gifWhat I miss??
the part about that amp only being able to produce 2300watts not 3000 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Soooo... my subs fried from too much wattage? I did not set my gain past 3/4 way.. but then again i didnt test it with my meter.. nor do i really know how. At least im assuming this means my amp is still good, and i can buy new subs soon. I suppose i should just buy subs rated for say 1,500 watts rms and not have to worry about this happening again? If anyone has any reccomendations of particular subs i would be well off with lemme know.

Thanks everyone for such quick replies.. its very helpful. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Yeah sorry it is 2300 watts.. the amp is misleadingly advertised as being 3000 watts at 1 OHM.. not exactly sure why.. (peak power)? Anyways i guess that means it wasnt fried from too much wattage... bah..

Yeah. Chances are your gains were set wrong.

Instead of trying to find some uber powerful subs, why not get some you like and properly set the gain to match the required RMS power???
