building box

well i am running 2 12in assassins in a prefab box for a 97 ram x-cab made by kruzin audio.. and it sounds ok, dont get me wrong.. but i dont believe the specs listed by the manufacturer that the box is 1.2 cuft per chamber... i did the math and it just isnt so.. so today, off to lowes i went and bought a 4X8 sheet of 3/4 mdf and came home to build something 'better'

i am almost done with it. using this prefab box as a outline of what will fit in the underseat area.. i took its footprint and enlarged it a little were it could be and elimintated some dead space in the original design, and i have enlarged the original design by nearly .5 cuft per side.. close as i can figuer it, it is nearly 1.15 cu ft per side now.. i also set it up so the subs fire downward toward the floor instead of forward toward front seats..

like i said i am almost done with it, should be able to give it a whirl tomorrow.. luckily enough UPS tracking page says my PG x600.1 will be here tomorrow, so i will get it installed too. i will post pics asap..

finally my questions! what type of filler (and how much) should be used inside the box chambers? also, did i do a wise thing making the subs fire toward the floor?

thanks for any info guys..

i am not sure about the subs firing at the floor. but for the filler, go to crutchfield.com and look there for it. its suppost to be no more than 50% of the box. i bought 2 pounds of it, but my type R sounds perfect without it.

well my box is on the small size.. that stuff at crutchfield looks like it would work well, but would prefer not to wait.. does anyone know of something perhaps available at Lowes or other home improvement places?

i know it helps on small enclosures.. have personnaly seen it side by side.. but the stuffing came out of a prefab qlogic box so it dont know where it came from either..

Yes, go to Wal-Mart in the fabrics section. In the far right hand corner there will be Poly-fil. Get the cheap bags of polyester fiberfil and stuff the box to the ratio of 1lb per cubic foot. The bags come in 20oz sizes so two of them should be plenty.

If you hoisted the subs up off the floor enough for any excursion that will be produced by the lowest notes on your given power....your box design should be great. It defninitely loads the subs for a more powerful punch. Another thing you can do in the future is to install a rearward firing vent or multiple round ports. As long as you have about 2-3" worth of space between the back of the box and the rear cabin wall....they'll get stupid. If you don't have the room there, try on the sides closer to the back of the box, firing sideways. If you have the required room of 2-3" from the port mouth, it'll be on like neck bone. For your enclosure size, the vent should be 28 square inches x 16" in length or (3) 3" round vents at 16" long each. Those are guaranteed additions to the slamaliciousness of your system.

i rasied the bottom 1 1/8in from the floor, allowing for the 1/2" of speaker outer edge and 5/8ths past that.. there are 4 rails that the frame of the box comes down to the floor front to back, but the front and rear of the box for that 1 1/8th in are open, so with a flashlight i should be able to check and see it the subs excursion is a problem.. i just got home from getting a 32oz bag of poly fil.. i am gonna finish it up here this eveniing..

ports sound like a great idea, but i am hoping i like how it sounds sealed.. it would be nice to finally see some good sql after all this money i have spent recently

The cool thing about the ports is that you can seal them up anytime you like. At any big fabrics store, you can find "SEAT CUSHION FOAM". It comes in different sized blocks. Get one big enough to fit about 5" into your vent or ports. Stuff it in there and the port is now sealed. The volume taken up by the port foam is pretty tiny, so it is nearly the same internal volume as the sealed system.

well, i got both subs mounted and wired.. i dont have the new amp installed yet, so i am only using one of the 12s at this point..

THIS NEW BOX RULES!

i am getting much clearer deeper louder bass..

i am honestly not sure how much more i can take.. having 2 of these with a bit more power might make it a little overbearing //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

i cant wait to get the other sub and the x600.1 hooked up tomorrow..

i will also post some pics..

thanks for the help guys

i will probably get to porting it.. but i am gonna wait for my new HU to get here.. my p860mp will make another large improvement in SQ, and in adjustablility of the subs.. if at that point it is 'loud enough', i might just leave it sealed.. anyways, thanks for the tip on the polyfil, i never even tryed it without it, but it sounds great, so i will give it some credit..

A quick few minutes of your spare time TODAY could port that box and not be waiting on the P860 to do all the work for you. Port it and tell us what you think. By the way, when you do, your can definitely turn the amp gain down some to at LEAST equal the loudness of the sealed option. Remember, by using the seat cushion foam, you can transform the box right back to sealed with no loss.

not to argue about it, but i am sure i read that assassins perform better sealed? can anyone with experience with AA assassins chime in here and let me know before i go through the work of adding ports.. also, i carpeted it today.. i willhave some digital pics up before i go to bed tonite.. possibly you could point out were exactly to add the ports for optimal sound.. i truly appreciate all the insights.. i am only skeptical to monkey with it cause it sounds great now..

here are some pics of this new box

i used about 12 oz of polyfill in each chamber.. and this box ROCKS THE KAZBA

PS - yes the seat goes down fine, i just didnt shoot a good pic of it that way
