Building box for 1st SPL comp

I attended my first SPL comp last night, and I've decided I want to compete. I want to be in the single 12" class, and was wondering if there was a certain box design that proved better over others. I bought a car audio guide that said sealed enclosures hit highest on SPL, but everyone at the comp last night had ported. This is the speaker i have-----http://koleaudio.com/products_woofers_mfw.html

Please dont tell me my speaker is a POS or whatever because that is all i have. If anybody has any designs for SPL that are rather narrow(So I could possibly upgrade to 2 12's later) please let me know. Thanks for the help in advance. Sry I'm relatively new to this.

not that your sub is not good for spl, its just that it wasnt design for spl. your sub was design for the purpose of fitting in a vehicle that lacks space.

will it hit hard and loud placed in an enclosure that will allow the sub to spl, yes , will the sub put the high number that will win you a couple comps, i doubt it, but then again you have to see who will you be competing against , and what kind of equipment are they using.

if it was me. trying to compete on an spl comp. i would save me a cople of bills.$$$$ buy the best 12" sub that money can buy me, then do the same for a matching amp. then depending on the vehicle youre going to use. and sound deaden. make the enclosure acordingly. but trying to compete with what you have at hand. may be more work and not as funn,

specialy if you loose miserably and people point their fingers at you and lagh.

not trying to bash. just you need to buy the appropiate system for what youre trying to achive.

now if you want to still use your current system for spl, see what the competition is runing and what number theyre putting out. youll need the T/s parameters of the sub. find the resonant frequency of your vehicle. calculate how much room you have for an enclosure. measure your enterior so you can use cabin gain on your favor. then with that info at hand start designing your enclosure. deaden your vehicle, so that your panels dont resonate and cansel you sub output out. make sure you have real power going to that sub and that your electrical system is up to the current draw. then go have some fun. lol

i hope i can be on some help on your jurney to spl.

Thanks for the input. The peolpe I'd be competing against were hitting about 138. Some were using Cadence, Kicker L7's, MTX, and such. In west hicktown GA though, it's not super tough competition or anything. Many people have at the comp last night had things such as 4 15's and 3,000 watts in like a 5 cubic ft box and hit 142. So, I think it is mainly something that the knowledge of the correct box, and how to tune it.

I have a 1200W amp(Im not going to name it because I am going to get flamed like crazy), and the only other speakers I have is an Audiobahn Aw1251T which wont handle power, and and Audiopipe 15. Should I just sell out and get something reputable? I don't really want to do that, but if i must, i will.

P.S.--I only paid 40 bucks for the speaker I have now.

Put it this way, your chances of winning with that sub are slim to none. As far as selling everything you have and starting over.... if you want to win, or even be able to compete for that matter, this is the road you must take //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Good Luck

Dang, beat me to the response. I would say Audiobahn is nothing to frown apon, tryout the audiopipe and see how you do. Atleast you have somewhat of a chance there //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
