Building a new computer....

I need to get rid of my AGP motherboard to run some off the newer games. I'm not going to run Vista right away but I need something with some power. I'm thinking dual core, SLI, 4 gigs of RAM etc... Does anyone on here know how to build a computer with parts online? I mean if I had the correct parts, I could do it myself but I don't know what parts to buy. LMK guys. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

It's caek.

I build all my own rigs, also for my friends and family. It's actually pretty difficult to screw it up if you take your time. Most all of the connectors can't be plugged in the wrong way. If you handle things carefully and don't mechanically damage them, it's a snap!

I can stand the thought of buying another pre-fab computer.

BTW http://www.newegg.com is the bomb!

What types of games you looking to run? DX10 and/or DX9? Budget? Other preferences, etc?
See thats the thing. Probably all DX9 ( I don't think XP can use DX10? or am I wrong?) I don't want Vista, but I want **** good graphics. I can get a video card no problem. I just need a Mobo and CPU.

To tell you the honest truth, I hated vista until I used my buddy's comp. It sure as hell takes a good rig to run it and game, but its WAY nicer than xp by far.

And you'd be correct in your assumption that xp cannot play dx10 games (technically, it can and will, but microsoft is preventing an update with that so you have to buy vista)

If your looking at dx9, and minor dx10 stuff, a 1950, or 7900/7950 will do you plenty fine.

Dx10- 8800gtx640, or 8800gtx by far, ATI's really lacking in dx10 so far. If I were you I'd wait a bit though, they're dropping the 8800gts320 soon, and the 640 will take its place, and there's going to be a new 8800gt comming out to be the midrange 8800.

SLI won't get you what your looking for. It's commonly noted that your better off getting a better single card with that cash, than two get two lower end cards. SLI doesn't equal 2x the performance.

Also, amd/intel make a difference? Intel ftw right now on the dual core's for cheap. But I know a bunch of AMD fanboys that wouldn't buy anything with intel on it...

I can get a working 7600 or 7800 GT PCI-E (i think 7600 not sure though) for $75. So I think thats a good start. CPU doesn't matter but I need a strong one and a good MOBO.

Actually ATI does have Dx10 cards but I would not recommend them, drivers issues out of the demon hole. As far as SLI I agree it uses a ton more power creates more heat and all and all a PITA unless your looking to run balls to the wall. As far as AMD vs. Intel it depends on your budget you can get an AMD x2 5000+ black edition (unlocked multiplier) for like $100 on newegg and its a strong performer.

And to the OP, I have a 7900GTX laying around if you're interested pm me.

7600 won't do squat in todays games if you raise the graphics above middle.

I'm running two 7800gt's in SLI (overclocked to 554/1300) and they're struggling in most of the newer games. I'd definitely go with one of the one's I suggested (gpu, that is).

680/650i mobo, and a c2d should do you fine then

Edit:

Duh on s775 lol

And I never said ati doesn't have dx10 cards, I said they're lacking in that department, because they're cards ****.
