Not sure if this is a repost, but I ran across this tutorial that is at least somewhat interesting for someone looking to save a few bucks by building there own projector at a fraction of the cost as compared to purchasing a new unit. It is interesting how they use a standard lcd and a $50 lamp. An lcd with a bad back light is also a contender for this project.

engadget's total cost was $748, including the cost of a brand new $330 lcd. They could have used a much cheaper lcd that has a bad back light or some other minor damage relatively cheap on ebay or elsewhere.
