Budget setup advice

Hi guys,

I'm installing a budget setup in a 2011 Hyndai Tucson. Please give me you 2¢ on the following:

After some internet searching, I've come up with the following items for my setup:

  • Stock head unit and rear door speakers
  • Alpine MVX-V60 5 channel amp -small and cheap ~$200
  • Image Dynamics 6.5" components for front -$160
  • Sundown E-8 v2 sub in custom sealed box inside rear quarter panel -$90

Questions:

  • Are there alternatives you suggest for any of the above items?
  • Are the ID components really worth the money over others such as the Infinity 6030cs?
  • Do I really need a 5 channel amp since I'm only upgrading the front speakers?
  • If not, then what amp do you suggest for the fronts plus the sub?

BTW, the goal is sound quality and tight bass. We listen to lots of music, but mostly indie music and some techno, so a little flexibility is needed. I'll be sure to post pics of the install!

Thanks!

Your system will sound much better if you get a nice head unit. I didn't care much for my alpine pdx-5 amp. You might be able to find a better alternative in the classifieds.

Speakers and woofers should do nicely.

I like ID, haven't hear their comp speakers. Their subs are very nice.

Do I really need a 5 channel amp since I'm only upgrading the front speakers?

That depends if you want to run the front speakers active or passive.

If you use the speaker crossovers (a passive setup) then no you would only need a two channel amp and a sub amp.

If not, then what amp do you suggest for the fronts plus the sub?

http://www.caraudio.com/forums/amplifier-classifieds/562587-eclipse-pa-35601-5-channel-amp-fujitsu-ten-old-school-amp.html

But you may want to consider a separate sub amp if you want more power. Either way that eclipse should do nicely for the money. If its your first setup I'd run the eclipse amp bridged for the components.

Info I left out: this is mostly my wife's car, although we share often.

Would prefer to leave in the stock head unit because the car has integrated mic for Bluetooth in the headliner, steering wheel controls, and the installation is pretty integrated in the dash.

Will likely make the front speakers passive, so only need 3 channels.

Would prefer to only have one amp for simplicity, although I realize it may be more simple to have a two channel amp up front under eh passenger seat, and a mono ap in the back near the sub... Now I'm paying for two amps, and it may be cheaper to get a three channel amp.

As I write, I'm wondering if I could use the Alpine I listed above in the following config: 4 channels bridged to only supply the front components in passive mode at 2 ohms, sub channel wired to dvc sub at 2 ohms. Is this too much load on the amp?

You should be able to wire dvc subs at 1 or at 4 ohms. You will need to wire them at 4 ohms because your amp is only 2 ohm stable.

See here for a wiring diagram Subwoofer Wiring Diagrams at Sonic Electronix

You could draw more power if you got a dual 4 ohm sub you could wire it @ 2 ohms (the lowest resistance your amp can support).
