break in time on Nightshades

could be, its seems very small to me, but thats what ive heard the nightshades like. just over 3cf net, tuned to 35hz. 60sq. in. port.
oohhhhhhhh.... i think i know what it might be .... i was recommended to try a different style port, its "tapered" you could say, 60sq. in. exiting the box, 48sq. in. entering the box/on the inside of the box. i was told this would make it louder??... maybe the air is not getting in the box properly to cool the sub off.

ill verify that tomorrow after i switch the subs from side to side to see if the other one gets warm... thanks!

ya i looked at your sig and thought that your box sounded just right for the nightshades but i thought i would throw it out there because it has happened to me before. i hope thats what it is! it always pisses me off when i get new stuff and i run into problems. good luck

I don't think that should be a problem, as it's sort of the same concept as an aero port. Well, most aero's are flared on both sides, but some people only use the flare on one end and that doesn't cause a problem as far as I know. I think switching them around will help answer a lot of questions, and even if it doesn't solve the problem it'll narrow it down a lot more //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif.

here is the basic concept of the box, the sub to the right is the one that gets warm. Its furthest from the port.

and yes, the nightshades are that huge lol

ya that right sub might be gettin a little choked there depending on how much space it has. it def could be your problem.

ok, i really hope thats the issue. boxes can be built for pennies compared to $300+ subs.

good lookin box. just started mine today, hopefully it will come out lookin somethin sexy like that. i hope thats ur problem tho, cuz, like u said, it's alot easier to build another box than ruining spendy subs!!

ya well do what the other guy suggested and try switching out the subs and see if the other sub heats up when its put in the different spot.

Is the sub just getting warm or is it getting hot? It should not get hot. I've used many NightShades in all sizes and only had them get hot when playing full tilt on music with 2k+ watts for a bit. They do have a little smell when new & are breaking in but not too bad. If the smell is really bad then it sounds like that coil is getting way too hot. It doesn't make sense for one to do it and not the other unless something is wired different. Quadruple check the terminals on the basket and see if maybe one is backwards. Not the wiring, the actual terminal itself might be installed backwards. That can sometimes happen from the buildhouse and if one terminal is backwards then you might think you have it wired ocrrently when in reality one coil is out of phase which would definitely cause the overheating issue.

Swapping subs around is also a good idea. I've seen guys with overheating issues with their subs cause of too much port area but that typically heats up all the subs not just one.

its getting warm, i mean i can still touch the dustcap, but its is a significant difference over the other one. Ill check the terminals aswell, that could be something there.

ya thats weird that only one woofer smells and gets warm. so it should be either there is something wrong with the woofer itself or the placement of the sub in the box.

yep. i havent narrowed down the smell though. it could be the combination of both still being broke in. but im assuming its the one getting warmer. ill play around with it tomorrow

if it get the motor hot 9/10 its the bonding glue between the magnets and topplate/bottom plate.. did you chea DCR on the coils individually? check you wiring at the amp as well as the woofers.. each coil in a very high powered application should have its own wire.. i don't think its the actualy port affecting that ONE woofer.. usually it will affect both woofers, and when one is affect its so minute you won't beable to tell...

ok, i pulled both subs and checked all the coils. individually all the coils seem to read within reason. the sub that i havent had an issue with (getting warm) reads 0.9 on one coil and 0.9 on the other coil. (D1 subs). the one that gets warm quickly reads 1.4 on one coil and 1.5 on the other coils, seems a bit high, but ive had some subs read higher like that. so everything checks out there.

BUT, when i series each sub (should result somewhere around a 2ohm range..)... i get 1.8 for the first sub, which is within reason. and i get 1.2 for the sub that im having problems with....

1.4 and 1.5 wired in series should result somewhere around 2.9, which seems rather high, but its reading 1.2! i checked, and re-checked, and checked again, tried new wire. everything. still getting the same reading.
