Break In period

Break in, or no break in on subs?

Thats what she said
When I picked up my RE SE's, the guys in my local shop told me that I needed to break in the subs at under half power for about 2weeks (or about 20 hours straight, if I wanted to do it faster). I've looked around, and everywhere I look, one guy says "blah blah blah you have to break them in", and then the next will say "blah blah you don't have to do anything, throw them in and let them wang"

I'm currently keeping the volume pretty low (although I still only have them on this lil MA amp, putting 1/4 the power to them that they can handle), because I'm freaked out about clipping (dunno what it sounds like to be honest).

To be honest, when I got my memphis's (that the RE's replaced), I put the suckers in and let them bang from day one. And I beat the shit outta those things for at least 6 months, not one hiccup from them. But now that I'm told about this break in period, I've been really anal trying to keep the volume down.

So what are your guy's opinions on the supposed "Break in period", or breaking in of subs?

Let em wang!
Let em wang! x2
You wont kill anything if you play them loud. They will just sound different once they are broken in..
Would you buy a new car and just start beating the crap out of it?

The only problem is that if I ever got a new car... I'd certainly beat the shit out of it, drive it like you stole it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Just thinking about the different components of a woofer, I can see how some parts (spider and surround) would change after being played for a while, but I don't think that it will affect power handling.

they are not the same...not even close.

your talking about an object that needs lubriction from eating it self up...and comparing another object thats whole purpose is to move, stretch, and has no friction points..

let them play

Yeah, but as we all know, when things are tight, and you stretch them out too far, they rip *eek

Just FYI, I'm going to break them in I guess. I can't really bump them any hard with this amp anyway, so I guess it all works out that I have to...

remember that akward time when you first learned what masterbating was and your shit got raw from doing it so much, but you couldnt stop because it felt o so good?

i dont believe in breakins.

I agree that you don't have to break them in to play them. They will be sonically different once they are broken in.

I believe that specs are taken on subs after a certain amount of play time. So your not hearing nearly as close to the reference as you would say 20-40 hours into playing them.

Will it hurt them to run them within the recommended range from the start? better not, if they are good speakers.
