Brand New Type R 12's

If it's just excess glue burning it doesn't matter if he turns it down for now and up later. Once the excess is gone it should stop. If he's going over that temp and actually melting coils and actual adhesives, then he's in trouble regardless. Anyway thermal powerhandling on a sub doesn't change much with box size, except for impedence differences, but that's usually minor in the grand scheme of things in a daily driver. Turn you bass boost down, your probably clipping your amp, which is why the subs stink, you giving them way more than the 1200 watts your amp can put out cleanly.

you smell band-aids? if so it's your coils

That put alot of things in perspective for me lol thanks //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

When you set your gains make sure your bass knob is at 100%. It's for turning down the bass not making it louder.
Alright thanks for all the help guys //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Your subs are doing that on certain songs because the notes on those songs is going lower than the tuning frequency of the enclosure. Nopt sure if that amp has a subsonic filter, if it does, make sure it is set a couple of cycles lower than the enclosure's tuned frequency and you will be ok. The reason this occurs is because at frequencies lower than the enclosure is tuned to, mechanical damping goes out the window and drops to near zero, allowing the woofer's motor to move out of control. Hope that helps.

Here are some pics.

So they dont smell really anymore just the center of the cone gets a tad bit warmer than the rest of it.. Not alot at all just a little bit warmer.. should i be concerned? my gains are set a little below half.. and my subsonic filter is at about 28 or so an my box is at 30.3 HZ.

If you are smelling them the voice coils are burning. I have toasted a set of type R's before. Depending on the generation of sub some of them are not good at thermal power handling. Mine were in the trunk of my mustang and so by the time I smelt the issue it was too late. They sounded great until they let go.

you have to remember power handling is based on a certain criteria. you are putting 600w and not 750 per sub but in your box and setup that 600w may be enough to toast them. Also many people don't truly understand gain. It is meant to match the input of you amp to the output of its driving source. So if you head unit has higher voltage outputs light 8v or something a gain half way up can be too much you may only need 1/4.

bottom line if you are smelling something you are hurting the sub. I would take the gain back a hair and kick the subsonic up a bit. also find the songs that affect it the worse and make sure you gains are set so with that in the player you are not over driving the subs.
