Brahma 15 vs. Avalanche 15 my tests

Okay so here's the story... i had two sexxx 12's then sold them and got two magnum 12's. Since Ihad the mags I never could quite get what I wanted out of them. I think they just weren't the type of drivers (in terms of response and actual sound) that I was looking for. So I traded the mags for a brahma 15 plus some cash and crossovers. I ran it for a while and then my friend who just got an Avalanche 15 a couple weeks ago, who I'm doing an install for, said I could throw the AV in the same box and run it until we had time to do his system. So here's the comparison:

specs on install:

enclosure: 4 cubes net to 32hz

Amplifier: Hifonics bx1205D

Vehicle: 1997 Ford Mustang

Box positioning: In place of the back seats

Frequency Response:

LPF is set to approximately 65hz.

The brahma DEFINATELY plays better down low near and at tuning (30-35hz).

The Avalanche plays much better above 45ishhz

From 35-45hz the output is pretty close with the Avalanche being slightly louder

The brahma sounds to have a more flat response in the enclosure with a slight drop off as the frequncy raises above the peak.

The Avalanche seems to get louder up to about 40hz then doesn't have the roll off that the brahma does..

It's the low end that gives the brahma the VERY SLIGHT edge in this category.

SPL:

No contest at all the Avalanche is much louder 40hz and up. I don't need a meter to tell you its much louder.

Blending:

The Avalanche seems to blend a lot better with the front stage. It doesn't drop off as bad as the brahma and is a little more "punchy" with kickdrums and fast punches. Don't get me wrong the brahma blends pretty well, but there is a slight gap in the frequency response where the brahma falls off before my Kodas pick up. This could probably be fixed by raising the LPF, but I don't like my subs crosed over too high, because I don't want my bass to localize.

Smoothness:

Here's where the brahma really shines. i still have yet to hear a driver that is as transparent sounding as the brahma. While the Avalanche sounds very good the sound is a tad harsh compared to that of the brahma.

"Quickness":

I don't think there is a clear winner here. Both drivers have virtualy no "overhang". While the Avalanche may sound to be quicker to an untrained ear because of the punchier bass, I still think the brahma is just as quick. Both drivers are top notch in this category.

Well I think that's about it. I don't know which I like better. i guess it depends on my mood. If I was deep smooth bass that just sounds **** good I'm goin for the brahma. If I want some loud *** bass or if I'm listening to rock with a lot of kickdrums I tihnk I'm gunna go with the Avalanche.

Anyways, I also found the Avalanche to not be as much of a low-end monster as everyone claims it is. The Avalanche really does shine above 40 hz contrary to popular belief... although I tested the 12 in a 1 cu ft sealed box NET so that could be the reason (although thats the recc. enclosure size). I also found it to be excellent at quick punchy bass, great SQ at all freqs though.

Agreed, too many people come out saying, "ya well thats you and your car!".....yea so? People arent allowed to tell others thier results/experiences with subs? As long as you state the box size, amps, and basic details i think its good info, but of course not necessarily the "end all" of tests.
