Most, if not ALL manufacturers (With the exception of the really high end subs, such as the RE XXX, which lie to make it seem a lot more practical for car audio use.), the recommended box sizes / tuning is what's best for the subs. It's not like the manufacturer says a random number for both box size and tuning, it's based on the sub's mechanical and thermal limits, as well as it's design.

Try the sealed then. If you feel you're lacking low end extension you might try to build a ported box to give you a little more output down low.
