Best? Bamboo seems to be what you are looking for then, extremely dense stuff. Looks nice too. Next down would be birch from what I understand, although I have always been partial to mdf's uniform density. Take it for what it is, I voted for birch for ya. Void free marine stuff mind you. 13 ply I think it is?
