i have an alpine type x powered by a phoneix gold r15 and a rather crappy premaid box off of ebay it is like 1.2 cubic feet ported and i was wondering if i change the box will it sound better/diffrent and was wondering for suggestions of what size to make

Yes making a better box will help a TON...

Contact Alpine and ask them what the recommended specs are for the box. Build that. You'll be extremely happy with the results.
