Box/Amp rack help...

I'm designing a box for (2) 12" Alpine Type Rs that will run off of (2) M1005 (One per sub). I have everything figured out for the most part. I was planning on a ported box, but I don't think I have enough room. My plans were calling for a 4 cu.ft. box with 30 sq.in. of port area per sub, 60 total. My port length needs to be 29 inches to tune it at 32 hz. I have about 5.5cu.ft to work with according to the dimensions of the extended cab of my truck and I may pic up another cube give or take because my amp rack will be raised...

The face and top of my box is going to be fiberglass. I may make the bottom fiberglass also. The rest of it will be MDF. I'm still working out the construction process of my box.

Now my questions...

1. I'm looking for a good sounding bass. Not too boomy. I'm looking for SQ or SQL, I'm not too conerned with SPL. I listen to a lot of hard rock for the most part and the occasional hip hop. Do the Type Rs really not sound that great in a sealed box? I may not have a choice between a sealed or ported box. I think my ports are going to take up a lot of my box and I will be under 4 cu.ft. when its done. Possibly not thought.

2. I plan on building tray/boxes for each individual amp. I have (2)M1005 and a F345. They are going to be fiberglassed into the top of my box rotated and at a slight angle. Basically all my wires will have to run thru the internal area of my box. Is there a better way to go about this to keep to wires out of my box? I thought about using some 2" PVC pipe and running it from the bottom of my amp trays to out the back of my box. There would be a single pipe for each amp. That would keep my wires out of the box. Granted they will still be going thru the box, but they will be in a PVC pipe. Does that make sense what Im thinking about doing there? Let me know if there is an easier way to do this that I may be over looking...

3. If I do decide to try and make a ported box work does it have to be a single port or could I do 2 ports. I'd like to do 1 port on the top of the back centered in the rear and have it raised out of the top of the box to so it would match the raised area of the amps. If I did it this way I could get about 4" of length that would stick out of the top of the box. That would help with the port length and keep my port from taking soo much area out of my box.

I've built many sealed boxes over the years and I've only done one ported box a few years ago. I just bought a new truck and I'm going to have it for a while so I want the stereo to look nice and sound good. 1. Ive heard mixed thoughts on type r's sealed, you best bet is to build both sealed and ported, see which one you like better, and go from there, if you build it nice enought, you could probobly sell the one you don't like on here for a nice profit.

2. i have my wires run thought the box like that, and haven't had any proboblems, i just tie wrapped them nicely down and tucked them down along the back wall, and drilled 1 big hole where all the wires come out nice and neatly in the back, make sure either the hole is small enough that it doesn't let any air out, or seal it up good with some caulk.

3. it'll save you space and time to build a box with just one port. but if you want you can build 1 box, with 2 chambers each having thier own port, i personally think it looks better with just one big port. overall you'll have a smaller box with just 1 port.

Cool thats what I needed to know. I think I might go ahead and mount my power distribution blocks inside the box. I can also mount my ground wire to the bolts I plan to use to secure the box in my truck. That way I would only have one 0 guage power wire and my RCAs penetrating the box. They will be coming in on seperate sides of the box anyways.

type r subs sound just as good in a sealed enclosure as they do in a ported. if you want louder bass then go with the ported, a big sealed box will give you a more linear bass reponce instead of a quick drop of DB's that is common with the ported enclosures.

if you run your cables inside the enclosure since youre allready using fiberglass i sugest you glass the wires to the side of the enclosure to keep them from hitting the enclosure and making anoying sounds.

you said youre going to ground your cable using the same bolt that youre going to use to hold the enclosure down, i suggest that you use a threaded rod for that particular one. use a nut and lock washer under the car then place your ground inside the car connected to the rod then another lock washer and nut to hold the ground securly in place. then trugh your box and then a washer and nut to hold the box in place, that way you have a solid ground that wont vibrate loose. i dont know if im making my self clear, but i hope you get the idea.

having part of the port out side the enclosure is a good idea since it allows you for more internal enclosure volume. as long as you can make it look good i say go for it.

now once you start the install take lots of pics and keep us posted, it sounds like an insteresting build up. good luck.
