blew out a dayton 12" ho

Wow who let the newbs in this thread badmouthing the HO's saying they're not meant for a sealed enclosure......if you had a shred of proof a shred.

Anyway been hammering my 2 12" HO's with 3600watts for around 5 months now. Only times I had issues were a few times I left the lights on for a couple hours on accident and voltage was dropping below 12volts. Started to heat the coils. They sound amazing I have no complaints they are a well made subwoofer. I wouldn't listen to anyone else. My guess....scratch that my bet is that your electrical is not up to par man. Sorry to hear that those are pricey subs and a pricey lesson learned. It would be hard for me to believe anything other than user error. Those are some of the best subs I've ever had.

This! Exactly what I told him before lol
The shop needs to fix it. Tell them they set ur gains incorrectly which caused your sub to blow from clipping. And stick to it because they may give u some BS especially if they think you dont know much.
I would but I'm pretty sure they wont refund my money. They're located in a place where there's a lot of competition. Not a very professional place. It's my fault for taking it there and I'll just have to take the loss.

yea everyone (but the one poster above) has had nothing but good things to say about these subs. I'm pretty sure they just set everything up poorly. That's what I get for taking someone's advice in taking it to that place.

He has no proof all he has is a blown sub they can easily say you changed a setting. I mean its your word against theres and I dont think they will be ready to fork over some cash no matter what they think to be the truth. They like to make money not spend it. Its a lesson learned never go back buy a new sub and do some research on setting your gain correctly and this want happen again.
True.....id still be all on their arse. But that's just me.

Guess so man. Lesson learned man. But lets see what PE says first. They may suprise u.

I hope so. I spent 60 bucks to resend that **** speaker. When I talked to the guy on the phone, he just gave me a return number and told me to send it. With my luck, I was probably better off just purchasing a new one.

If the coil is burnt you will be SOL.. This is something they can verify fairly easy and quickly. You should have checked the coils before you sent it back. So if you do not have a dmm now would be a good time to go invest in one. A decent one can be had for around 35-40 bucks but even a cheap one 15 bucks or so would be better then nothing.

Blowing subs has got to be the worst feeling ever. Just thinking about it I think about back when I was new to car audio and I did the same mistakes. Back then the first thing I learned was that RMS rating was a much truer rating than max. So I did the same thing as many people have done, bought some 600watt rms subs bought an amp that was rated at that same rms for each sub hook it all up and expect to never have any problems. So when I did blow the subs I was like huh well they were rated to handle that and the amp is rated to give that much power, so where did I go wrong? Later I learned it's not such a simple matter of matching ratings, that is only a good place to start. Once you have your ratings you need to consider your electrical because even rated power is very dangerous if not properly supplied electrically, drops is voltage will cause your amp to clip sending an unclean signal to your subs which will in turn heat up and possibly fry the coils and whalla blown subs. Even still yet if you have matching ratings, proper electrical, you can still go wrong by not setting things up properly like the gain. Sure your amp is rated at such and such a power per channel but it may very well produce well over that so setting up the gain correctly with a DMM will help save the life of your subs. Even then there is still a few more things that can go wrong. Soon you will learn that boosting signals I.E. bassboost/EQ/sound effects of some other kind, can also send distortion to your subs causing them to not perform correctly or heating up the coils and frying those. So in order to ensure longivity to "ANY" subwoofer time needs to be taken to set up the electrical and all the settings properly.

Wtf? Why?
Guess ill be using USPS more often. I'm a pro at stuffing a flat rate box
This is what a friend/dealer told me and he had no reason to lie to me and I would think he would be pretty up to date on what shipping companys are doing as this would effect his bottom line. But I want say its gospel so take it for what it is.

When I get boxes built, a buddy of mine owns the shop and they usually Hook tthe subs up for me too with the box. Even then, I set my own amp gains. I blew my first sub ever using their settings. Every other sub I set myself by ear and they're still kickin to this day even with the ppl I sold em to.

it was actually usps. But i had my bro do it because I'm always working. I'm pretty sure he had them package it instead of doing it himself.

Good advice thunder. Yea I guess I had to learn the hard way. I'll be looking through tutorials here for the future. But when i get my new sub I will take it to a more professional place to have it all checked out. I dont really have much free time at the moment.

well through all my bad news these last two days, i work at a pawn shop and a jl audio w7 13" has just went out for sale. its used of course, but its priced at 350, and i get about a 30-40% discount since I work here. If parts-express cant replace my dayton I will get this. This sucker is heavy and huge compared to the dayton

funny too because we never get any top speakers out. We always get kickers or speakers like hifonics. Perfect timing i guess
