blew out a dayton 12" ho

if pro built you a box for that sub, just get another one if you have to buy and have someone else tune it for you.
that was my plan. In fact, when I get it installed I am going to have the installer check every thing in the car, the components, amps, and have him/her tell me if everything is set properly. I called parts-express and I'm sending it back today. I'm sure they will inspect it before deciding whether they'll give me a free replacement. Hopefully they can. I pretty much played it for about an hr if you add up all the time.

@Prince, I'll be sure to keep those settings. Also I will ask the installer if he can mess with the volume settings. I checked the HU and it goes up to 50 something, and I didnt go past 21 when I played it. Didnt give me a lot of room to find the perfect volume.

Any decent installer would have tuned it using a 0db tone. Even if it was tuned to 800w (unlikely on that amp) you shouldn't have hit that constantly on music for more than 2 or 3 seconds max as most music is generally recorded at -3 to -6db with some exceptions on bass hits reaching 0db.
I think -10dB is more likely. Some pop music CDs can reach -5dB for short while. I personally set the gains by ear.. not installer though.

well that *****. I loved the sound for the time it lasted. Im guessing going with a different sub is my best bet. What's something similar that goes well in a sealed box?
These Daytons are not meant to get loud in a sealed box. They're actually not meant to be used in a sealed box. They're supposed to be good SQ subs for well recorded music (rock, etc), but not hard hitting rap or hip hop. The Dayton HF series are the ones meant for a sealed box application, but they require a box that's too big for a car. IMO, Dayton does not have great offerings for sealed box car application.

Really? I checked through many threads and other forums and they all said a sealed box or very small ported boxes were best for this speaker.

which sub would you suggest? A good sq speaker but can handle hip hop? And one that will go in a sealed

I listen to alotta hip hop and my Daytons do just fine. I even have YouTube videos of them setting off car alarms on hip hop songs.

Granted I'm not sealed, but they do hip hop just as well as anything else. They may "shine" on other types of music though simply because those songs generally have more intricate bass lines.

Call the shop and get on that azz. If you did not mess with a single setting after the installer let you leave then I would say its his fault and should pay for his mistake. Problem is proving you did not mess with the settings. So I would do two things buy the same sub (that sub can take that amp all day) and find a new person to either set ur gains or learn how to urself.

yea seems like I'm going to have to take the loss. I sent the sub back today, hopefully parts-express is willing to send me another one after they examine it (if not i lost 60 bucks on the shipping). I definitely will be taking it elsewhere or learning about this stuff myself. It's my first audio system ever so I've learned my lesson early.

This! Exactly what I told him before lol

The shop needs to fix it. Tell them they set ur gains incorrectly which caused your sub to blow from clipping. And stick to it because they may give u some BS especially if they think you dont know much.

He has no proof all he has is a blown sub they can easily say you changed a setting. I mean its your word against theres and I dont think they will be ready to fork over some cash no matter what they think to be the truth. They like to make money not spend it. Its a lesson learned never go back buy a new sub and do some research on setting your gain correctly and this want happen again.
