Bi-amping Passive Crossover = The shit

If your passive crossover has a bi-amp feature, use it.

I just finished a setup with old Alpine type X comps, they have some badass crossovers. Plenty of attenuation settings for the tweets and Bi-amp capable.

One of the best imaging I've experienced with a passive system. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/veryhappy.gif.fec4fed33b4a1279cf10bdd45a039dae.gif

I also forgot to add that wiring one of the mids out of phase, almost 100% of the time, sounds better and is needed to get a solid center image.

Most certainly, this is what I did with my SR6500's that I just installed. They haven't been in long enough for me to really tune them much though. Sadly one of the crossovers appears to have a bad tweeter network in it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif So currently the tweeters are being run active until I can get the crossover repaired.

I haven't delved into active yet so gonna try it all first with the passive crossovers but bi-amped so I can do time correction and some other work with my 9887. Thinking if your set has some good crossovers then you can probably get pretty close to an active setup but using the passive crossovers in a bi-amp configuration.

Gonna have to keep this in mind when I really start tuning my speakers.

If you have the 9887, then you can totally ditch those passive crossovers. If you konw the factory crossover points for your SR6500s, then you can use those points if you are really satisfied with the sound.

Passive xovers are known to eat up some power(watts). thos precious watts would be a better benefit for your mids/tweets.

James, you seem like a knowledgable guy, i'm fairly new to the front stage scene.. What exactly is bi-amping, since i've searched the both headunit section and speaker section pretty nicely and haven't read enough about bi-amping to really figure it out myself.

some passive X-overs have a feature where you can run a channel of amplification to each speaker (either tweeter or mid) rather than having one channel of input and having the X-over sort out the frequencies from a common source. Doing this would take 4 channels of amplification to run a 2 way component set, 2 channels for the tweets, 2 channels for both mids if that makes sense.

INdeed.

Did a three way set of the older Alpine Type-X's bi-amped... with the huge passive xover networks and a lot of adjustable settings...

Sounded GREAT. Amped off a PDX 4.150 in a Lamborghini Gallardo.

Yea I bought most of my equipment with plans on going active in the future but these crossovers seem to be pretty good so I am thinking for now I will trust Polk and run em for a while and use the 9887 for time alignment with my tweeter placement.

After bi-amping these older Type Xs, the mids really came alive now that they have some good juice going to them. I didn't know they can go that low and loud in undeadened doors...

I have a set of Rainbow Germanium and the mids are defiantly lacking. The tweeters sound excellent, but the mids are not cutting it. Doors are deadened to the max with all holes covered. Im only sending ~80 watts to the set so maybe the mids just need some more juice. Does anyone know how much power I should send to the mids alone?
