Hi I was wondering what would be the best type of magent (ferrit, ect) for a subwoofer and even inside speakers so far as effiency, power handling and any other matters.
I ahve Neo and I will let you know in 10-15 years.I heard neo loose there strengh from heat and age.. It this true?
What is important is the magnetic flux density in the gap, which is achievable with pretty much any type of magnet. Of course, neo lets you get there with a smaller magnetic stack.
Not all neo has the same currie temperature, either. But there is a certain trade off between the BHMax and the currie temperature...a grade of neodymium with a higher currie temperature is also likely to have a lower BHmax.
Also, it's hard to source neodymium in North America...it mostly comes from Asia. I haven't been following it too closely but apparently the neo market there is really volatile, with inconsistent pricing and availability.
As for which is more expensive....maybe debatable. The cost of NdFeb is around $1.40/BHmax right now whereas ceramic is about $0.50/BHmax. So obviously ceramic is less expensive in that respect. But NdFeb will save you money on shipping (significant weight savings), you can save some mounting depth (although that is slightly dependent on the stroke you're looking for), and you don't need a magnetizer that accepts giant motors (although you still need a powerful one).
Anyways....there is no best...just a best for a particular application.
