Belt Slipping?

What dose an alt belt sound/look like when it slipps? Im installing a mechman alt. i think its tight as ****. It was EXTREMELY hard to get on.

Whats going on is that my cars computer regulated all the wires in my car to 13.8 volts.

so i got a ext volt regulater from mechman aswell. The only way to get around the computer is to wire the ext volt regulater right to the batt with a toggle switch.

So i have everything installed. Trun on the switch thats on the dash to give the ext volt regulater power right before truning on the jeep. I cant keep the voltage right. It flots everywhere. from 13.0v - 15.3v

The alt overheats. But when its runing the car shakes and all the lights in the car flicker to the shaking of the alt as it spins.

I Just called denis and shipping it back. Denis helped me though the hole install. We think its the alt.

Hmm. I read another thread on stevemeadedesigns forum of some guy that had a camry and a mechman alt and he had the same issue with the belt slipping.

Strange

I was going to buy the alt from him when he had it on sale and i asked him about the belt slipping issue and here's pm:

Well, every high output alternator will have belt slip issues if you aren't careful. My reccomendation is to purchase a gatorback (made my goodyear) belt, they are the best, and get it very, very tight. Make sure the pulley is free from debris and everything and you'll be set. Sometimes new belts stretch - so check it every week or so for the first few weeks, and get it re tightened if you can.
If you can physically move it too much then its not tight enough - it needs to be tighter than a "normal" car's.
I guess it just needs a better belt lol

Whatever, I've decided not to upgrade my system to 2400 watt because it would be such a pain to find a good alternator. Well, i'm not saying mechman is no good. I'm just a noob when it comes to having to deal with that sorta issues on alts >

well that belt is so tight that i cant even move it with my body. im heavy to. but i think it is slipping or somthing. it shaks the car @ idle speed. scarry shit here

those little pulley just can't grip enough belt for the torque needed. If you get a leece neville with 6 inch pulley it can grip that belt at 300 amps all day any speed. just no one wants to spend 1k on an alternator that really works. I had one in my van and it rocked. the thing is twice as big as a large case gm i had to put it where the AC compressor was then put a small compressor where the alternator was. those are the true beasts

I have a mechman and love it... no sliping problems but i have good wrap and 7 ribs. what is the wrap like on the alt in your setup... you may need to add a idler

You dont even know belt slippage //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crying.gif.ec0ebefe590df0251476573bc49e46d8.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wow.gif.23d729408e9177caa2a0ed6a2ba6588e.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/verymad.gif.3f39c5c2fd57527b671fad3efdfac756.gif

Shredded 2 belts in 3 days due to slippage... a huge draw at low rpms is a no-no..basically locked up both alt's pulleys trying to get enough juice out of them for the system and there wasnt enough friction to spin them up to speed so the belt slightly sticks for a second and then gives way and starts flying around the pulleys normally except the two alt's pulleys arent really moving...tons a friction, belt shreds...have to stop a bunch to let the car cool off getting home (without the belt, no coolant pumping if you didnt get it)...fun fun fun fun f!ck...but if you just have a single alternator you should be just fine.

And if you infact do have bad slipping just look around locally for custom car guys they could weld you up a mounting setup for an idler pulley to go near your alt to get better belt wrap on it...but I'd just try a slightly shorter belt first.

And if youre looking for a belt with grip I'd get the dayco one with the metallic crud on the ribs...better grip than any ive seen

I had to go back to a full size pulley (not as much output at idle, but helps the slip with more belt contact area), use a shorter goodyear belt, and do this:
