hi guys. what are some of the BEST products that u guys use to prep the metal before you lay down mat?

of course, i know the basic answers, soap, water, alcohol, some sand the area down also. are these the only things i should use? will other chemical based products affect the "sticky side" of the mat and make it less effective??

i heard "mineral spirits" as well. sorry, but as a noob i must ask, what exaclty is that?

Well what I did worked very well. I first did a "general" cleanup of the area with soap and water. Then I dried it with a clean cotton (terry cloth) towel. I then proceeded to use ACETONE for the degreasing. Again, here I used a clean cloth to apply and another to wipe clean. I am anal retentive, so I did a second degreasing with ACETONE. You really dont want to use mineral spirits because it leaves a slight residue which might hinder the adhesive backing to the matting. If you are worried about the strength of the adhesive, you can always use a spray on adhesive as well. A product like 3M Super 90 Heavy Duty. Make sure to roll over the matting to get maximum holding power.

By the way, what product are you using?

What ever you use PLEASE use some gloves and adequate ventilation. Just so you know Acetone will basically de-fat you hands after long term use. (yes it disolves the underlying fat layer and drys out the hand) M.E.K. is also pretty bad stuff that is absorbed straight through the skin. It is a great sensitizer....meaning anything will set you off....(again long term use) Oh the fumes from both of these just affect your central nervous system....that dizzy feeling is just your brain dying...LOL

Ok public service announcment is over...Have fun and play safe.

but is it okay to use the product like 3M Super 90 Heavy Duty IN ADDITION to the back of the mat?? i mean, is it necessary?

how many of u guys have done this?

I used it in some of the areas that had a lot of curves or bend in it. Yes you can use it with no problems, just wait about 30 seconds after spraying (just let it get tacky) then apply the matting.
