battery under the hood??

well i got a new car and has a shitty battery under the hood. it's only about 550 cold cranking amps and looks very old and probably won't last through a michigan winter. so what are some good batteries? i can't see plunking down $100 on a redtop. what are some good cheaper alternatives?

You can get Exide orbitals at Wal-Mart now pretty cheap, they use the same dry spyral cell technology that the optimas use.

i think a kinteik HC800 or 1400 would kick major ***. the 1400 is group 75, and fit into my saturn with a bit of modding. its got ~1300CCA on the sucker.

checked walmart and they have everstart maxx for $60. it has 850 cca vs. 720 from the redtop. so what makes the redtop wqorth more?

FWIW - I got an Everstart Xtreme from Wal-Mart a few years back (similar to the Maxx I'm guessing). That thing's been abused for ~5 years now, and has even survived the death of an alternator. It's probably been run dead at LEAST 5 times. Kansas may not be Michigan, but we get around zero pretty regularly in Jan/Feb. and this $60 battery shows no signs of weakening. Paying much more (certainly 2x) would be a waste IMO.
