Battery install.

So per tony30cl's recommendation I went to a recycling yard about an hour away and bought an AGM battery. Its charged up and they load tested it and it did great. I dont know much about it other than its a UPS 135aH battery. It is huge.. weighs 100 pounds.

I have a million questions about hooking this up and I pray you'll be patient with me in answering them.

1- I have a Duralast gold battery under my hood as it is. Is it OK to hook the new battery up while keeping my old battery? Would be easier that way because of big 3 upgrade I just did. Ive read that this is typically not smart to do and you will destroy both batteries because of one overcharging and one undercharging... but is there some kind of isolator or something I could use?

2- If it is OK to keep my other battery and hook this one up to it, do I need any sort of regulator? I was told this battery needs around 13v to charge up and my car alt puts out 14.2v, which Im afraid may overcharge it.

3- Theres no way the battery will fit under my hood, so it has to go in what tiny amount of space is left in my trunk. What size wire do I need to run to this (around 17 feet long) from my alt/front battery?

Im sure I will have more questions.. but lets start with these 3. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

1. Yes as long as the resting voltages are relatively similar.

2. Most 12v batteries need at LEAST 13v to charge with 14v being ideal. You shouldn't run into any problems.

3. 1/0g will be fine.

Well that all sounds almost too good to be true. I'll check the resting voltage of the battery tomorrow, I know the duralast rests at 12.3. Can I do it with a multimeter or will I blow my shizz up? What setting should I use?

Hey, not sure when you'll see this, but your inbox is full.

When you told me the batteries would be fine together as long as the resting voltages were similar, how close do you mean? Within .5 volts of each other? I'll check today.

It stinks because I think I need another 17ft run of 1/0 before I can put the battery in.

UNLESS, this would work. You tell me.

Right now I have the one battery up front. Big 3 with 1/0. I have 1 run of 1/0 going from the + on my battery under my car to my amp. I can take that run of 1/0 and ran it to my second battery instead of my amp. But I would still be missing the ground for the second battery, so heres my question..

For a ground, would it be OK to take a short run of 1/0 and go from the trunk batterys negative post to the bolt in my trunk where I have my amp grounded? Would that work?? Or does it absolutely have to come from the first batterys negative post. I would think that it would work since the front battery is grounded to the frame of the car and the rear battery would be as well, I guess its just a matter of how good the grounds are right?

I want to put this second battery in //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Pics tomorrow. Bought a ton of ring terminals + 2 fuse holders today so I can install this monster. Let me clean up all my wiring under the hood and get all of this installed, then pics. Dont want to look like a huge noob.. but you may still see my ghetto particle board amp rack.

Theres a few pictures. Nothing amazing, its dark outside.

I think its way louder in my trunk than it is in my car even with my seat folded down //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Tomorrow just for giggles Im going to put the box in my backseat and see what thats like lol

Just to let you know, it won't hurt anything to run both of those batteries on the same circuit with no isolator. The battery with the lower resting voltage will drain the other battery down towards the lower resting voltage. Anything over 12.5V is considered good, so I wouldn't worry. its common to see charging systems spike up near 15V when an accessory kicks off after running. Anything more than about 13V is enough to actually charge the battery.
