AutoTek EQ Help

Alright so I got everything hooked up today, all wires are connected and tucked away. I had a few questions before I turned everything on as this is my first time ever using an EQ.

Model: AutoTek 7007

1. It has different inputs(1 & 2) for the front and rear. Does this effect the subwoofer control at all? Like if I'm on Input 1 can I still adjust subwoofer volume or do I have to be on Input 2?

2. How do I tune the gain on the EQ (Not sure how DMM would be used here), will this override the gain set on my amps?

3. Does the "SUB" knob adjust the gain of the subwoofer? The manual says increase the volume but I wanted to double check. Then would the "SUB BASS" feature pretty much just be the LPF?

4. Does the "Stereo/Mono" switch effect anything?

5. Roughly what should the Subwoofer and Front/Rear frequency be set at or should I set it to "off" for full range?

6. Will I need to change or worry about any settings on my existing amps or can I just ignore those now and do everything from the EQ?

Thanks for the help.

First, read all of this manual at http://www.autotekcaraudio.com/manuals/current/Autotek7007EQManual.pdf

It answers all your questions. If after reading it you are still confused, you might want to seek help from a local shop or car audio expert.

My answers in BLUE

1. It has different inputs(1 & 2) for the front and rear. Does this effect the subwoofer control at all? Like if I'm on Input 1 can I still adjust subwoofer volume or do I have to be on Input 2?

The two inputs are not really for "front" and "rear", they are switched, so intended more for "main" and "aux" use. When you push the little button on the front EITHER input 1 OR input 2 is selected. The 7007 splits whichever input you selected into the front, rear & sub outputs.

2. How do I tune the gain on the EQ (Not sure how DMM would be used here), will this override the gain set on my amps?

Set the head-unit and EQ input gain so the EQ doesn't clip first, then re-set the gains on your amps if needed. Not enough room to go into detail here - you should do some research. But remember to leave some headroom in your amp gain settings - if you crank up frequency boost on the EQ *after* you set your amp gains, you can over-drive the amps if they are set too tight.

3. Does the "SUB" knob adjust the gain of the subwoofer? The manual says increase the volume but I wanted to double check. Then would the "SUB BASS" feature pretty much just be the LPF?

The Sub-Bass, Mid-Bass, Mid and Treble knobs will either decrease or increase a specific band of frequencies (45, 120, 2200, and 12000 Hz respectively) by plus-or-minus 18dB. The filters are 'flat' (0dB gain) with knobs at center.

The LP and HP switch settings on the top of the unit are not related to the EQ knobs, they are cross-over filter settings - the LP switch determines the frequency cut-off for the Sub output and the HP switches determine if you want low frequencies removed from the front and rear outputs. I like to set these wide open and do my cross over settings on my amps, but season-to-taste.

4. Does the "Stereo/Mono" switch effect anything?

When set to "Mono" the sub output signal is mixed to mono and the same mono signal is placed on the sub-L and sub-R outputs. When set to 'stereo' the sub output remains stereo. Set it to Mono if you only are driving a single sub off the sub outputs.

5. Roughly what should the Subwoofer and Front/Rear frequency be set at or should I set it to "off" for full range?

Depends on your amps and speakers. I like to set the Sub LP cutoff at 120Hz and the F/R HP to Off and then use my amps to set cross-over where I want them. If you do not have LP and HP settings on your amp, then I would start by setting both at 80Hz.

6. Will I need to change or worry about any settings on my existing amps or can I just ignore those now and do everything from the EQ?

You *might* need to tweak your gains (see my note about about clipping).

Hope that helps (one can always 'hope') :0

Good Luck.

Jep
