Audio Spectrum Analyzer Software

hey, this might be an uncommon question.. has anybody used spectrum analyzer software to see what frequencies are poppin' off when you play your mp3 files? When a song doesn't sound right, this is the sort of stuff I think would help me understand what's going on.. there are a bunch of programs out there I'm just wondering if anybody has used them and can recommend a good one. I think I’ll “buy” one or two of these from my friend “Torrent”

Also, sorry there’s probably other threads about this… how do you use audio calibration CDs and which ones should I get for Alpine 600S speakers?

Try Audacity from Sourceforge: Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder

Once you get it installed, select a portion of your song, select Analyze ==> Plot Spectrum

You are going to have to play with the options to get to the lower frequencies though.

Edit: Goldwave, Wavelab, and Soundforge are some other programs that you can look into if you really want to start playing with audio!

A spectrum analyzer is merely a visual representation of the signal, it is in no way an accurate representation of what your speakers are actually producing. That is the difference between a 'spectrum analyzer' and a true 'real time analyzer'. You can learn a little bit from a spectrum analyzer, but realistically not very much.

ARTA allows you to import audio files and analyze them.

I also run TrueRTA with both a calibrated and an uncalibrated microphone.
