Atlas Qts settings

Hey, I got two AA Atlas 12" subs getting 290 rms each with 1 cube sealed each.

I listen to only rap and want maximum loudness from these.

what Qts Setting should i do? low, medium, or high?

low - short gold terminals

mid - 1.5 ohm resistor

high - leave terminals open

(yes i know to go ported.. and yes i know that these are SQ subs... just a temp setup)

a quick answer would greatly be appreciated. thank you.

^ Try those two and see which one you like better. The "low" setting should have a little better low frequency extension but less overall output, the "mid" setting should have a little worse LFE, but a little more output in the "sweet" range rap. My guess is you'll like the Mid setting better.....but, try both to find out for sure.

Qx in general refers to the ratio of energy bouncing around (stored then released) vs used.

it can help determine how resonant a mechanical system is. Q is increased by placing the woofer in a sealed box. Q is increased as well by putting the woofer in a small box.

the higher the Q in a sealed box, the more resonant it becomes. it will begin to favor one note over others and may sound louder. the downside is that low freqeuncies are contstricted and thus the sound may not be rich or deep or epic. of course there is too low of a Q where the efficiency gained from having a high Q is just lost and the bass is deep, but thin overall.

in general, the total Q is typically aimed for 0.707, with a range between 0.58 and 1.0.

you probably should try all 3 options.

thank you. so how do you go about measuring this?

qts? you can change it? inform me please...
With the Atlas sub, it has a "resistence" coil that you can use different value resistors on (or no resistor, or short it out, etc) to vary the Qts of the subwoofer. This isn't something specific to the Atlas, you can do it with any DVC subwoofer (power one coil, use the other as a resistence coil).....however, the Atlas is the only woofer I'm aware of actually marketed in this fashion where they tell you the resulting Qts and other specs for a given resistor (or lack thereof). With any other DVC, you'd either have to guess, call the manufacturer for assistance, or measure the speaker yourself. Not recommended you try it with a regular DVC unless you have a TON of experience.

so its just the atlas. can my 13w7's Q be changed.

Yes. But, like I said......not a good idea to try yourself without really knowing what you are doing. Not just a "I know which wire goes where most of the time".....but to really, really, really, really know what you are doing, what will change, how it will change, what it will change to, etc etc. Because it won't only change the Qts.....LOTS of things change by only powering one coil. Almost everything about the speaker will be different.

But I think it's good that people understand that the Atlas isn't a new and novel idea from the variable Qts standpoint. They're just the first smart ones to market the idea.

ok, thanx squeak. and sorry for the thread jack. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

you never wire the second (or gold terms) on an atlas( hence the xbl^2) as the coil is not made to have direct current from the amp. ( helps to control distortion or something).

I have mine tuned at 34hz in 1.2ft^3 each chambers. and have the qts open or no resistence on them so its set high at .52 ( even though they say it is not recommended for ported enclosures,. but try getting ported specs from them) !

and the box size seems small cause it takes up my whole trunk. but its angled in the front and actually I need to remeasure it it was givin to me a long time ago and I never measured it my self just made ports and modifications to it. ( I guess that sounds kinda dumb though that I didnt measure it myself before I cut the ports and installed em.) , I pulled the ports out of the box about an inch and seemed to get a h*ll of a lot louder so did I change the tuning ? . ..

but i guess I have a question then how much does box tuning change if you still have the same lenght port (round) and pull it out some?

I had a lot of drinks tonight so beer with me here I guess I type as much as I talk when I drink.
