Are passive crossovers interchangable? Got a bad mid-woofer i think

How important is it to match crossover with midwoofer like brand and model wise? I think my hv-165 is bad on one side and AQ has some midwoofers ide like to try. But can i use my hertz crossovers with them? My tweeters dont match either lol there DD t2s

Just wondering if this would cause an issue or what i should do

STORY:

Been having issues when trying to replace my db drive a5 90.4. Every amp i tried made my drivers side door flip out. Tracked down this amp/speaker issue to these results.

Every time the power wire is connect either directly to amp or to the passive crossover, my drivers side midwoofer(Hertz HV-165) makes a screeching sound and the cone flex's back and worth. Even with volume at 0.

Tryed using a different crossover with same results, so i ran a completely new power wire threw the door(old power wire tapped into OEM wiring) with the same result. So its 100% the woofer itself.

Heres the weird part, it reads fine on a DMM for 3.9-4ohms AND it plays fine on my DB drive A5 90.4 but my current eclipse amp and 2 us acoustics made this noise. So im lost

Using a different brand crossover will be hit or miss. Assuming the components are roughly the same size/style and the impedence is the same it should work well enough.
Well there both 6.5 mid-woofers, heres the set i was considering AQ-PA-6.5 (Sold As Pair)

I know i can custom make passive crossovers on parts express, or should i just bit the bullet and get a entire new set to run w/ the DDs

EDIT: Aw crap there 8ohm not 4, guess not... So any 4ohm midbass should work ok?

Impedence has to match and speakers should be roughly the same size (size tweeter and midbass). IMO builidng your own crossovers from parts isn't terribly worth the investment. Good quality caps and coils are expensive, unless you were doing a complex notch filter for a full range cabinet (home theater type stuff) I'd avoid it. I used to do it ages ago, but these days you can get amps with built in crossovers so cheap you could almost go active for less.

Check your rca cables, as you may have a bad one. Also get a volt/ohm meter and check the load at your speaker leads(at the amp) Should be around 4 ohms, if they read 0 or OL, you've got a grounded wire somewhere. Speaking of grounds, make sure your amp still has a good ground.

-.- did you finish reading the quote you post? Last sentence says read 3.9-4ohms at the speaker leads. The tweeter wouldnt play fine if it was an rca issue would it?

Now wondering if maybe the lead tabs could be touching metal inside the door. Think im going to pull it outa the door then power it up again and see what happens

must be ADD.

0.o no must be trying to decided why his speakers trippin..... I can have 2 thoughts a post //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

If only one of the tabs is touching metal it may read fine but giving it voltage makes it freak, god i hate pulling my door off

So i just went out there to do a final check on the woofer and swap it out for a fosgate just so i had something in the door for now. This time i removed the speaker from the bracket vs removing the bracket with the speaker in it.

I tested it outside the door w/ test leads and lo and behold it played fine. I noticed the part of the tab that held the tensels was bent outwards and could of possibly been connecting with the door. Prob got bent while trying to situate the brackets for OEM wholes to line up(doors take a 6x9 stock) so i bent that back to original position.

Placed the speaker back inside the door and tried putting the test leads(went strait to amp, no crossover) to the new leads i ran threw the door earlyer and once again it played! Connected to crossover and reconnect crossover leads to the amp and NO ISSUES!!!!!!!!!!!! Sounds way cleaner on the eclipse! Super nice amp, really impressed with the SQ of my front stage

So i guess the tab(dont remember if it was + or -) must of been touching the door frame. Glad its finally solved and my speaker/amp setup if finalized! Now i just need a 1/2 din EQ :up2somet:

thanks @RAM_Designs for the great amp!

He got a Premium 32440 from me.
