Are my JL 10w7's hooked up right, seem like they don't hit that hard? Help?

Hey guys,

Finally got the Jl's installed, the setup was done by circuit city at a very reasonable price and they spent some quality time on it. The system sounds very good, and hits the tones well, with no misses, and the quality is good, but i was overestimated the loudness the bass gives out! It bumps hard, but not as hard as i seen in others, what could it be? I heard one JL 10w7 hooked up to a rockford t50001bd mono amp, using 4 gauge wiring in a ford explorer and it seemed to hit harder then my TWO 10w7's hooked up to a rockford T10001bd mono amp using the stinger 4 gauge wiring kit and 1.2 Cap, with multiple digital gauges. Also, i too have a ford explorer. This other guy with the one jl put his cell fone on his roof and it was bounces all over, mine does to but not as much, but the difference is i have 2 subs compared to his one?

The second day the system was hooked up, my cap made a straight "beeeeeeeeeeeeppppp" tone and my subs stopped working, i blew a 60 amp fuse, brought it back to circuit city since they warrenty there work, and they put an 80 amp fuse in it, that blew to, then they put a 60 amp fuse and it worked as it did the first day they installed it, on the way home it blew, and i mean i don't play the subs to there max loud level 2 out of 4 usually, and my subs turned up half way, as well as the volume and it still blew a fuse. So i went to pepboys bought a pack of 60 amp fuses and it hasnt blown yet.

Circuit city also told me my amp is to powerful for my truck so i might just buy a bigger digital cap and a optima battery up front. I should of got a bigger cap in the first place because i also have the door speakers hooked up to al alpine f-250 4-channel amp. Would that help if i put a bigger cap and battery? Also, I have the jenseen flip out as my head unit, and the guy told me there not so great, Could it also be my headunit that could make it less loud? The guy with the other explorer with one JL sub had one of those pioneer or alpine (cant remeber) DIN touch screen head units that go for over a grand. His videos are on youtube if you want to check them out.

But any advice, to point me in the right direction would be thankful

Thanks in advance,

Dan

A couple things that I came up with real quickly. First, it sounds like to you may need more than 4ga wire. Running a 1500 watt amp along with your speaker amp that is about 200 is really pushing the limits of 4ga. Also due to the W7's 3ohm resistance, who knows what CC decided to do when wiring. Chances are though that they did it right.

What kind of car do you have? Also check the x-overs on your amp as well as your HU, those could very easily be the culprit.

I have a ford explorer xlt and the subs are in a ported box that was built by a professional in NYC that deals with jl. I'll go to circuit city and talk to them about swapping in 0 gauge wiring. I'm pretty sure they did it corect because they spent over 3 and half hours doing it, and the guy that did it also put jl's in his focus so i was happy he had the expierence with Jl's.

What am i looking for on the cross overs?

if the80 amp fuse was blowing....why would they/you put in a 60 amp fuse? Also, like dude up there said, change out the 4 gauge with say 2 or 0 gauge. Also assuming your vehicle is 14.4 volts and you have your wire fused at 60 amps

14.4v X 60a=864 watts. i don't think 864watts is enough juice for 2 10W7's. Also since those are single 3 ohm coils, maybe they wired your stuff to 6 ohms instead of 1.5 ohms. I don't know but i would change/check all of this

Thanks for the response,

Even with the cap it still only getting the 864 watts? if those numbers are right.

I will switch out the wiring to 2 or 0, also how can i check what ohm they put it at?

Because it originally had a 60 amp fuse in it, and the idiot at the Road Shop should be slapped for putting an 80 amp fuse in there in hopes to fix the problem.

While your equation is correct, one you aren't figuring in efficiency, and two it takes more than 60 amps of current draw to blow a 60 amp fuse, it depends on what type of fuse it is.

To the OP, you can check the speaker wire running to the amp with a DMM and see what it says, or you can just check the wiring your self and what they did with it.

first things first...figure out why the fuse is popping. ie:drawing too much current, or is it shorting out on something.

second, check your wiring. make sure its wired properly. a lonnnng as time ago when i got my first system installed, i got it done at a shop. i had a dual 2 ohm sub that i wanted wired down to 1 ohm. the guy didnt recognize my sub since it wasnt kicker or jl, and figured it would blow easy. so the idiot wired it to 4 ohms. needless to say, output sucked dick, until i found out what it was and made myself never pay for installation again.

third, check your low pass filter (both on your cd player and on your subwoofer amp)

fourth check your gains

after all of this it should clear up. whats the specs on that amp btw? power wise. it might be a good idea to use 1/0 wire either way. its always good, even if you dont need it. hell you can get a full kicker 1/0 kit for 70 bucks or so off ebay.

edit: i should mention, anyone that just replaces a fuse with a bigger one, without knowing the root cause of what made the fuse blow, should kill themselves ie: circuit city kid. doing that is one way to increase the chances of ****ingup your shit by a big margin

Wow dumb move with the 60 amp fuse...

Are you running only the one amp? if you are, 4 gauge is pently for that amp. But get a 100+ amp circut breaker mounted near the battery.

-The amp being to powerful for your car is one of the dumbest car audio statments I think ive ever heard! NOT the case.

As far as your buddies system hittin louder, its all dependent on the install. Are your jl's sealed or ported? Did you say circut city did it? I think you need to stay away from CC, BB //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/*******.gif.a649d21efc0d1fd4890a6428166586c1.gif etc...

could be your alt. how good of shape is it in? i'd get it tested to see what kinda amps you are getting... a t10001bd draws an *** of amperage

bigger batt will help, chances are, the cap won't do SHIT if you allready have a problem, they only make a good system a little better... caps rarely solve problems... i have a 25 farad one and it doesn't do a **** thing to keep the voltage up without 2 batt's

well a 60 amp fuse is too small for that amp... at full output that amp could be drawing well over 100 amps, so it's not suprizing that the fuses would blow, the reason it wouldn't hit as much is probably because of voltage drops... (does it sound like it gets louder up to a certain point and then it sounds like it's actually getting quieter as you turn it up?) wouldn't suprize me if your elec. system is stock, my car's stock elec wouldn't even keep a 1000/1 powered on... (with a 25 farad cap)
