Are amps made in the year 2000 considered old school

RF and MTX still make good amps, on par or better than a lot of popular stuff on here like Audiopipe, Cadence, Soundstream, any Maxxsonix amp, etc. Granted their older stuff was better, some of their new lines are still good...just probably not worth the price compared to other companies.
Id take a Cadence ZRS, Z series, or IA series over RF and MTX.

Sorry, 10 years old ain't old school to me. When I think 'old school', I think of equipment built before '95 and even moreso of stuff made prior to 1990. But, I've been in and around car audio since 1987.

I'd tend to agree about MTX and RF as well as a few others, but would also add that because of improvments in manufacturing and board design every company has at least a half decent line of amplifiers to offer.. The big difference between a higher end mainstream amp and a not so high end amp is that the MTX (or whatever) uses high quality components and will put out more then its rated output, while brands with lower end lines may use the cheapest components possible and often don't make thier rated output.. (Unfortunatly many of the old school brands that used to sell top notch amplifiers have gone awry in this direction)

It also seems like no mainstream company makes a quality speaker or subwoofer anymore... and the ones that come close want an arm and a leg...

so your talking the days of Proton amps that looked like a furnace, had 2 buttons one green and one red. I had that amp pushing 2 cerwin vega.

I remember back around 2000 seeing a 1750 watt planet audio car amp for $1499 + tax at my local retailer... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

Seemed like a lot of power to me at the time and was definatly out of my budget... (I think I was rocking a 400watt Jensen amp at the time.. lol)

You are right ' date=' mtx makes the elite and rf makes the power. and if anybody buy's them retail i will supply the vasaline because they got seriously as/sraped.[/quote']

Yeah...Proton, Harman Kardon, Carver, 1st Gen RF Punch and Power, PPI M series, Coustic AMP-560, original Alphasonik, Yamaha YPA series, etc. That is real old school to me. CV's were the shyt back in the day, along with Kicker Comps.

I miss my kicker ZR series amps. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

But I'll be ok in a few days I think, got a USAcoustics USA2200 and USA2300 on the way to my door! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Those are amps I would consider oldschool. I would say old ppi and orion as well, along with the lanzar opti, the grayish black ones, not the silver ones. In reality...oldschool is in the eye of the beholder!

I think real old school ends in the early to mid 90's, but then I remember Fosgate when it was owned by Jim Fosgate, and cassettes were the hot new thing replacing 8 tracks.
For the first sound-off I competed in, I used a Nakamichi TD-350 cassette deck. That was in '87. CD players for the car had been out awhile but, they were expensive to a kid working part-time and going to college!

I owned two proton 222's at one point. Couple of Orion 2125 SX. Never liked US Amps, pretty much still don't.
I also forgot

Petra

Collins

Savard

AR

Altec Lansing (yes at one time Altec made subwoofers)
Glad someone else remembers Petra and Collins. We used to make fun of people with Savard "Rap Series" until we heard how loud they got on a Hifonics Colossus!

my step dad had a pair of AL 15" subs in the attic, by the time I was old enough to find them the surrounds were gone. I do remember the magnets were shielded so well, there was no magnetic field to hold a screw drivers like todays subs.
