AQ Guys - Ever tune low?

Seems to be a reoccuring thing around the forums I see. And myself aswell. All of my setups with my AQ drivers, have been tuned 38-40hz. And I mostly see everyone else doing the same.

Has anyone ever tried a little lower on the tuning? Im thinking of building a new box for my 4 15" AQ 2.5's, and since I listen to mostly rock/metal (but I still listen to hip hop and want it to wang) And was thinking of pooooooosibly going a little lower and maybe trying to compensate with some more port area (Ive got 150" of port for 4 15's...... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Thoughts/Opinions?

ps- Ive never had a setup tuned below 38hz, but I have had 2 sealed setups, so I dont really know what Im missing out on

i just did my buddys box hdc318 tuned to 36, sounds awesome, doesnt hit low quite the way i like but i like to murder the lows and he listens to rock and shit so its better for him

I've done several DD/AQ boxes at 35Hz and they will hit harder on the lows and prevent you from playing below tuning all the time if that's what you listen to.

For mostly rock/metal 38-42hz is what I prefer/recommend. I just tried my wall at 35Hz for a few days, but didn't care for it, so I'm back at 40Hz.

I have tuned DD 9512 and 3515 to 35 and 36hz. Much flatter response and still loud.

Used to run 2 12" HD3s off a Hifonics Collosus and had it tuned to 33hz. 5ft3 @ 33hz w/ 65sq in of port or so, was absolutely brutal anything below 55hz but above that it rolled off a decent amount.

 

Built a few other boxes tuned higher for daily(36+40hz) and they were louder from 50hz and above but to the ear didn't feel nearly as loud.

Well ya this is a daily driver, that will never ever see a meter, so ear loud is what Im going for.

I just dont know if I would benefit from going with a lower tune

I personally dont like tunes below 35-36hz, doesnt hit the high's good enough for me 37-40 is what I like

Well I was just curious if it was in the subs design to sound good at a certain tune. As most AQ setups I see are 36+, and most FI/Alpine/DC setups are 30-32

Didnt know if it was the subs themselves, or just personal preference

They still sound good at a higher tuning and can still hit the lows well.

It's part of the sub design itself. I'd go with 38Hz for a good all around daily box...

My teammate, whose Blazer peaks at 48/49 hz, can still flex his truck pretty good on the low notes. He has two HDC315's.
