Anyone have any experience building computers?

Sounds good. Are you ordering as you go? Because if your going to get everything from newegg wait and order all at once so you get combined shipping. Plus I can usually find the exact same stuff on there a bit cheaper.
Im gonna wait and order everything at once

Ok yeah I want vista
How much is that gonna run me?
$90 - $180, depending on the version. If you don't want a lot of bloat and don't care about the fancy graphics, just get Home Basic ($90), which easily runs as fast or faster (on multi-core systems) than XP ... Home Premium ($110) is the most popular choice adding a bunch applications and the aero interface for not much more money, but w/ added system overhead as well. Ultimate is what I use personally and it's the full-featured version with all the fancy graphics, applications, networking and security features built-in, but it's quite expensive ($180) ...

Hmm I think ill go with the premium version

I couldn't agree more on the PSU speech. PSU is very important. I think the Antec he choose is a very good unit. As I stated above, there are better, but he picked a good one.
I was giving my opinion based on real world usage on XP vs. Vista. My current pc running both Vista and XP Dual core X2 4800 2gb ram raptor drive 7900gt. I lost 25fps on bf2 and crysis was near unplayable. Also, I had to underclock my video card just get it to work on Vista.

Even on the quad core system, Vista had too many errors. It has the possibility of being a good OS, but I just see it being another ME *shrug*.

Both of my computers were limited by the video card though, you are going with one of the better cards out there. Vista may run as Jmac stated.
I don't see how it's another ME ...
ME:

Released Sept 2000

Replaced by XP in Oct 2001 (1 year)

Mainstream support ended Dec 2003 (3 years)

Extended support ended July 2006 (6 years)

Vista:

Released Jan 2007

Will be replaced by Windows 7 in 2010-2011 (3-4 years)

Mainstream support will end in April 2012 (5 years) at the earliest

Extended support will end in April 2017 (10 years) at the earliest

Obviously Microsoft is pretty serious about Vista (unlike ME), otherwise they wouldn't plan on providing mainstream support (actively working to improve the OS via security patches, service packs, etc.) for 5+ years and they wouldn't be pushing the release date of Windows 7 further back every time I check on it ...

I have Vista on 3 of my 5 computers and they have all been rock solid and, if it weren't for the fact that I can't get DVD X Copy anymore (it's the only DVD burning software I've found that is simple enough for my GF to operate), I'd probably upgrade my media computer to Vista as well as I find that Vista's media center app is substantially better than what's available for XP. The only computer I wouldn't even consider loading Vista on is my backup computer because it only has a 1.2 GHz CPU, 1 GB of RAM, and a GeForce4 Ti4200 in it (It would run like shit and I'd have to upgrade the graphics card to a DX 9 compatible unit).

I've built, sold, and fixed hundreds of computers w/ both operating systems on them and I really can't say that XP is better (perhaps prior to the summer of 2007 when Vista still had stability issues, but not now). The only advantages I see to XP are that people are much more used to it and more stuff works with it because it's older. If you're not willing to get used to a new OS or you have really important hardware/software that just won't work w/ Vista, stick w/ XP. Otherwise, get Vista.

ME originally was slated to be a long living OS as well. The Windows design team was put into overdrive and other divisions were brought in to aid to quickly get XP up to speed. I believe they saw it for what it was, a flop.

I am in NO ay saying Vista is a flop. I believe many of the points you mentioned above (other post, not this one) are in agreement with I said. DX10, better multi-core support etc. I think vista is a good OS, just was put out WAY too early. I personally had no luck with the OS. I'm going to wait for SP1 and then check it out again on my test rig. I've also read that there is a program that leans out the OS as well which may help to speed it up. I also do not like UAC. I think it needs more logic built into it. I understand why it is in place and it really helps people like my mother, but for someone with better than average computer security knowledge, it really just gets annoying.

Then you are good to go man. Great system you have built!

Have you assembled a new build before? If not feel free to get this thread moving again when it all arrives. I'm sure myself or Jmac can help //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Good luck.

Nope never before.

Is there anything I should know? Cant wait to get this stuff and start putting it together!

I agree that it was pushed out to early and that UAC is annoying as fvck ... I think they should've just kept XP for another year or so and released Vista only as a 64-bit OS w/ the new file system in place (or at least just as a 64-bit OS, 32-bit is on its deathbed, so why even offer it as an option ?) Fortunately, UAC takes all of 2 minutes to disable, so it's not that big of a deal, IMO. It's the first thing I do when I set up a Vista computer (the 2nd thing I do is load Kaspersky, which does way more to protect your computer than UAC ever can).
