Anyone ever wired a 79 Camaro before?

Hey everyone,

I have just wired up my 79 Camaro and wanted to see what you think of this.

I just finished wiring in my headunit, but something has gone wrong. The back 6x9 speakers don't play at all, but the front 4" speakers are fine. I checked all my connections, and ended up just taking a short peice of wire and attaching to one of the 6x9's and it worked fine, but then the front speakers quit working! Any idea what this might be? I'm really stumped here...

sounds like you either got a wire shorted out or backwards somewhere. I never had any problems in my '79 Berlinetta.

IIRC those used a common ground system.

Best bet is to rewire each speaker directly to the radio.

snova I never had a problem with mine. I replaced all of my speakers too and added 2 12s and still never had any problems out of the common ground.

I dunno lol never worked on one that old. Oldest I've done is 84 IIRC.

I know with the older Caddy's they have common ground systems. Diff. models might have diff. systems.

My car had common ground speakers. Use a dmm and check for continuity of each speaker. Best bet is to run new wires to each speaker as already stated.

I have already done that though... I got the car as a peice of junk and have gone through and repainted, built new motor, new interior, etc. The only problem is when I got the car the interior was in horrible shape and 1/2 taken apart, so I'm not even sure about the wiring at all. Anyone know where the grounds are in the car? I may have missed one in some out of sight spot... at least I have the dash taken out...

Just grounded individually my speakers directly to the body and they started working //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif ... pretty sure it was a bad ground like you guys said. Thanks to everyone for your help! Everything SEEMS to be working correctly... let's just hope it stays that way!
