any opinions on the GMC Canyon?

My little brother is looking for a mid-size pickup, he wanted the Frontier or the Tacoma originally, they were the first choices both good choices as well, however he's trying to conserve some cash as he's still in school and only has a part time right now. With my Dad's GM friends and family discount he can get a pretty good deal on one of the Canyons, so he's considering it. I haven't really looked at them too hard, just wanted to hear some opinions from some that may own one or have experience with them...

he's looking at the crew cab either v8 or 5speed auto depending on the discount I guess...

The biggest engine they come with is the inline 5

I personally like them but some ppl think theyre cheap looking(interior wise)

the one we looked at the other day on the lot had a 300 horse v8...the interior does look a bit cheap, just one of an array of areas where the Nissan's and Toyota's have many domestic vehicles beaten...

Toyota is where I would spend my money on a truck these days.

I love my colorado. Gets moving with the I-5 too, so I can only imagine how badass it is with a V8. Is it the 5.3l?

They are pretty plain on the inside, but its a solid truck. Bought it new in 2004 have 99000 miles on it and I haven't had any major repairs yet(knock on wood).

If safety is a concern, the Canyons are the most dangerous trucks on the road. They never survive a collision. the cab folds in half like an accordian.

that is incorrect...I work for a major insurance company, and I have already looked into the safety reports and crash analysis that we have on file for the 08 and 09 models from the NHTSA and independent studies, the Canyon is definitely not the MOST dangerous truck on the road...

If he is getting the Chevy or the GMC, don't let him read the latest consumer reports. Those trucks where rated just shy of "run away". Not good if a fairly simple vehicle like that has such low reliabilty history, and bad resale value.
