antenna help

I have a 99 mercury mistique i'm working on and i'm stumped. when the radio is on AM the reception sucks, however if you go outside the car and touch the antenna it works perfectly. there is also a static sound that plays through the speakers whenever you rub any metallic iten along the antenna. what am i missing here?

is it a power antenna. or just a regular mast antenna?

your body is being used as an antenna conducter...an easy fix for this....is wrap some 8ga power wire around the antenna long enugh to reach you in the drivers seat...when you want to listen to the AM radio just hold on to the other end of the wire...problem fixed //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
