another way to not clip?

what is so bad about doing it that way?
Well lets think...

1. There's no way to know what the output voltage will be once you've cranked bass on the HU and every HU will be different

2. Generally turning the "bass" all the way up in the HU causes it to try and boost those frequencies, anytime your HU tries to manipulate the frequencies in some non-linear way it's diverting from what the original sound was supposed to be. An amplifier simply amplifies linearly and not based around a central frequency.

3. I thought I had a third but I have since forgotten what it was...

EDIT: I like Rabbit's reason, just pretend that was my number 3 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

*Some* headunits only output max (rated) signal voltage when the subwoofer output is set to maximum (forget which brand right now... some Pioneers maybe?), but for the most part what others here have said is correct. And your wording makes it sound like the person said to adjust his h/u's EQ (bass control) all the way up, which is not the same as the subwoofer output adjustment. (wow I hope that makes sense to you lol)

What I suspect this person meant, and perhaps was misinterpreted, was setting your gain with the bass turned all the way up means you could adjust your bass all the way up, on the fly, with out clipping the amp. But like said by others here, most h/u's will simply clip the signal being sent to the amp when you turn the bass adjustment to max.

So how the hell do I know if I should set my headunits subwoofer setting to max to get the max voltage? lol. I figured thats what the subwoofer setting did on all headunits? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

Most h/u's can output max signal voltage with the subwoofer output set flat (dont require to you turn it to max to achieve this). If you are concerned you have a h/u that operates differently, consult your owner's manual, it should (I would assume) explain it if the sub output needs to be maxed.

But again, OP's wording makes it sound like he's talking about the h/u's EQ setting, not the sub output. No h/u, that Im aware of, requires the EQ to be maxed to achieve full signal strength.

you know how you have treble, bass, mid.... well take the "bass" and set it as high as it can go.

Nothing in the manual except how to get to the subwoofer setting. if the subwoofer setting isnt adjusting the output voltage...what exactly is it doing??
