Is it safe when setting the gains by ear to wait for the clip noise?

I read somewhere that u could easily burn up your speakers when setting gains..

My components are Alpine SPR 17S,and the AMP is PDX 2.150.. I am planning to run it with full power =)

Set the gains by listening,using a 1000 HZ test tone,duration of 30 sec,recorded at 0db i think. WAV format ofcourse =)

But need opinions and advices.. What should i do,what shouldnt i do,hints, tips etc.

yea doing it by ear is the best way cuz even on a dmm it can still be off even though numbers say its perfect cuz of the constant up and down frequencies of rap and stuff. tunr radio at loudest listening volume, set gain at zero and start to go up til it distorts then back it of a tad. then ur set

Once again we can see slite diffrences in answers. First answer is if u hear distortion ur in trouble, and then the second answer sugest me to hear the distortion and then turn it back.

let me just say that i am using a 1000hz tone,so there will be no freq changing . 1000 hz is the way to go with front components yes?

Also gonna set the gains at volume 58 from possible 62 as i have Pioneer p88rs

1000Hz tone is correct. Will a little distortion kill your speakers? no probably not. I've set gains by ear many times and never blown anything that way. But I can't say for sure I was getting the best performance from my amps and cleanest sound from the speakers either

Dont really understand that ''But I can't say for sure I was getting the best performance from my amps and cleanest sound from the speakers either''

I know that the best way to set gains is that osciloskope ''thingy'' after that its the combination DMM-Ears..

Maybe i first set it with DMM,and then some fine tuning with ears, but when using DMM i disconnest the speakers right?

what I was saying is I dunno if my amps were clipping or if they were not putting out the power wanted them to. I don't know if teh speakers were distorted or not receiving enough power.

yes u take the speaker wire out when setting gains with a DMM.

What about setting the gains on my woofer?

Gues ears cant do much there.. The amp has clip lamps.. And it at least has the power that is rated for, probably more.

For that i use 50hz test tone?
