and it begins... my tweeter pillar pod project

I made this suggestion in your other post but you didn't reply; don't know if you didn't see it or if you just didn't care to respond b/c it won't work...
if the tweeters aren't deep, why not just mount them to the pillar? I know you have the ability to do this because of your past installs. In my wife's car I'm putting the tweeters behind the pillars by drilling LOTS of tiny holes in the pillar and wrapping in cloth. Maybe that could work for you?
i get what you are saying but honestly i don't really like the idea or think it will work very well with the shape of my pillars and the lack of space behind them. sorry.

i know it would look really nice if i decide to glass them into the pillars. i may just end up doing that in the future. when i did it i was more concerned with getting it to sound right first rather than make it look pretty.

or you could have just angle cut a piece of PVC connector as it would have been less obtrusive and probably easier to glass in.
I've installed a few sets of the RSD's and the tweet seemed fine off-axis. My Vifa xt25's were horrible until I got them on-axis as they're so laid back and the ring radiator seems to block dispersion.

I'd make the sacrafice on looks for better sound, so I don't blame you for doing what it takes to get the sound you want.
could you explain what you mean a little better about angle cutting a piece of pvc?

maybe i like an exaggerated top end or maybe you like a laid back top end, i don't know. but i tried them both off and then on axis in the pillars using velcro first. did many hours of listening both ways and preferred the sound when on-axis.

and yes, function over form has always been the way i am. have you seen my sub box? lol

I think its different, not my cup of tea as far as appearence, but your going about it very well.

It doesnt look horrible at all, I just pefer a smoother blend of my speakers with my interior panels thats all.

I understand the reasoning for the mounts and as long as your happy with them, thats all that really matters. Nice job //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

BTW, Im so jealous that youve had the can to enjoy your ID Oems, mine wont be here til Monday //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif I am, however, very much so enjoying the Blaupunkt VC 100 tweeters //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I like the idea of projects and always trying to make your system sound better to "you." With that said, I am also not a fan of how they stick out. What I eventually wanted to do was put my tweeter up in the A-Pillar as well, but flush. Have done this before with some MB Quarts, which were harsh till I had them dialed in, but overall just looked cleaner. However, I have never heard a set with them sticking out like that and probably never will.

Again with that said, I just installed my new componets and flushed my tweet in the door as the pillar would have been to much work and I am a busy dude, so don't have time to set aside to want to mess with the pillars.

On another note, you think your tweets sound good on the RSD set(Which I thought were the best thing about the set, but overall just ok....) you should check into the new Pioneer line of either the D series(I have these) or the PRS line. One word...............amazing! And I have had so many different componet sets from over the years, so far have to say the best set I have had in a long time! RSD's were nice for the money, but I paid maybe 50 dollars more for these and I didn't pay but 65 for my RSD's. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Also I know you like your tweets, but IIRC you haven't had a lot of time with other sets, so just letting you know about the Pioneers as I know you updated the mids, which was smart, so just throwing it out there. These tweest on the D series are huge though, only downfall I see.

I will have some pics up later on, but going to post a review now. At work on a Sunday sucks the big one........till football is on, lol!

That's what I did with mine in the last car. All fiberglass. The base was 3 layers of mat. cut a mounting ring out of 1/2" ply. Set the angle that I wanted and wrapped it in t-shirt material and resined that. No mat on the outer portion. Not needed and made it much easier to fill and sand. Stuck in place with ShooGoo. Angled slightly back and sound great. The tweets are the ES-100 from the older CDT Eurosport set.

In my new truck the plan is to get a 3" mid and tweet in the a-pillars. Should be easily doable without them sticking out too much. Giant a-pillars FTW.

thanks. i like it.

i don't think it looks half bad. SQ ain't always pretty! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

most certainly looks better than it did before, and best of all your happy with the sound of it, the cosmetics can always be worked on.

I have been working a lot lately on tweeter placement in my truck so I will probably take some cues from your install here. Gonna have to raise them up to ear level to help out. I have heard they are better on axis and it seems to be the case but my ear still needs training. If I am not mistaken they are Vifa XT-25 or similar tweeters, the ones in the Polk SR6500 component set.

Did you ever have them installed in the pillars firing directly at each other? I know you had them in the kicks but not sure if you experimented with them up in the pillars in this configuration.

Also curious if you had ever tried them firing on axis at the opposing seat? I know this wouldn't work for a 2 seat car but thinking it might be a bit more cosmetically pleasing and may achieve a good 2 seat car.

Either way your progress looks good, the pillars certainly look nice with the suede on them, some fiberglass and smoothing out the shape and you would most likely be golden.
