If you had said with these tweeters I wouldn't have chimed in, but...if you ever get a chance to try tweeters in the pillars at various angles, try it and listen carefully. putting them on-axis really brings out the top end and adds detail. i am hearing things i have never heard before in certain music.
IMO "on-axis" is the only way to go.
That's a pretty blanket statement. You're smarter than that. You know that on-axis doesn't work for all tweeters. Some are much too 'shouty' on-axis, some aren't. Some that are supposed to have a drop in the top end when off-axis don't. Car to car... driver to driver (speaker to speaker).
