amp repair?

Alright I see where you're coming from on that. So would there be a way to get an estimate on how much it would cost to get it repaired without spending the 80bucks to ship it out to the shop?
****, unless you are in Canada it shouldn't cost that much to ship. Probably more like $14-$20. Don't use the USPS... they are high, and the parcel post service is the only cheap one and it sucks, takes forever...

Use UPS Ground or Fed-Ex Ground. Box it yourself. They will charge you another $20 for a box and packing material and putting it in the box for you..

Zed can probably give you a quote. Send them an email zedaudio@aol.com I believe is correct, if not go to http://www.zedaudiocorp.com and contact them from there. You will need to give a good description of what is wrong with it.

Stetsom has contracted Db-r to do all our warrenty and repairs in north america, just because he is sOOOOOOO good at what he does. Chris YOU THE MAN!!!!!!!!
Sadly Db-r is too busy so He's referring me to someone else. I'll accept his referral since Db-r is so highly appraised. I'm sure the person he suggests is just as good.

Well, Zed is way better than I.... I have to bow down on that one.... maybe not on the Korean amps because I have worked on so many but definately on the older model amps he would laugh at me trying to figure those out.....

Your amp in particular I think is a DEI (Directed Electronics Incorporated) product. And while it may be in fact Korean made and use Korean parts, it's still likely got the old PPI design in it and Zed would be a better choice to work on that one....

Just my opinion but I think he's better off sending it to Zed.... Stephen Mantz, after all invented high powered car stereo amplifiers.....

What amp was that?

We do complete rebuilds on Memphis 4K's for $400. That includes 12 new matched date code output FETs, 28 new Matched Date Code power supply FETs. 28 new 1% gate resistors, 8 new power supply drive/pulldown transistors, 4 new output drive transistors, 2 new Auxillary power supply FETs and an upgraded soldering of the mosfets that makes the amplifier VERY resistant to future vibration damage.

Not everyone wants their repair as cheap as possible. Some want a fantastic repair. Sounds like he really likes his amp. Any shop that only replaces 8 or 9 mosfets in a Memphis 4K is a hack-shop and you'll be lucky if the amp lasts 6 months.

What do you think? Do you NOT see my signature.... geez were you born yesterday.... LOL... j/k

Yes if we know what chip it is we can replace it. Through-hole or Surface mount.

Which amp could Zed not fix? the 4K? That doesn't surpize me, that's not his thing.... it's a big *** Korean amp, not an old-school type amp. Zed has sent such amps to my shop in the past because he could not fix or did not want to, and I fixed....

It's cool man, I even asked you for a quote on how much it would be to fix it. I sent you a few pics of the cracked ic chip. And I must of slipped through the crack.
I sent zed the memphis in the picture. He told me it would cost me around $550+ just to get it back up and running.
Wow, so we are a bargain on 4K's compared to him.. LOL I did not know that.

Your amp was in bad shape, and your right they likely replaced a lot more than 8 or 9 FETs. Memphis repair shop doesn't even count. I swear they have high school aged kids working in there after school.... I got one memphis amp here, a 4K, that the guy was a memphis dealer, he sent it back to memphis to repair, and the retards put the wrong rail caps in it.... They looked identical to the originals but where half the voltage handling twice the uF... Needless to say within 1 minute of turning on "POOOF" went the caps and the guy had to send it here.... Unfortunately it's still broken, because the output module, which is non-repairable, only replacable in this amp but rarely get's damaged so it's normally not a concern, got blown up by the caps being blown up so now the amp is just FUBAR... matter of fact I think the guy got a new module from memphis for it and I need to find out why he hasn't sent it so I can finish the amp.... But anyway, Memphis repair shop is retards as far as I am concerned.... They also use NTE parts to replace the drive transistors in the power supply and I see in your pics that ampmedics used them in your amp too. Those do not work right! We have all the OEM parts here. Not many other shops do, so they use NTE parts? Yuck, anyone here who knows ANYTHING about electronics "for real" will tell you to stay the hell away from NTE parts... I have never used them in my repairs and never will but I've seen amps from **** near every other shop (except Zed) use NTE parts in their repairs in some cases... I think its unacceptable.

That was the amp before I sent it out. The pics are not of the repaired amp. When Apmedics spoke to me he was making calls to order all oem parts, and he tackled the challenge of repairing the amp. As to you even saying it was in bad shape would you of took on the challenge?
Yes. That's cool though man, sounds like he did it right. Whoever worked on it before did not.... it had NTE parts in the power supply drive circuit, probably a previously repaired by Memphis amp, maybe a refurb....

I used to be that way, minimal on the labor, but too many customers want a good job done, and I had to charge accordingly for my time. I don't make a tremendous amount of money here like some think I do, I buy only OEM or better parts, all matched date codes, many times in quantity 1000, and I spend lots of time on certain amps that require it so I charge more to make sure it's gonna last becuase I HATE doing warranty work....

We have a competitor in dBDrag, David Paulson, won 2nd place in World finals last year in his class and 3rd in another, using 4 Memphis 4K's that dB-r rebuilt back in December 2007.

LOL, I probably know him from somewhere.... sometimes I get these phone calls from people asking for help with a particular type of drive board or something that's not easy, and they call me and start asking all these questions and I just answer them and then that's it, I never even ask who they are.... LOL... I'm too busy to talk on that phone much, seems I can type faster than I can get a phone conversation over-with... Speaking of which, I been on here way to much lately, I think I am getting that carpal-tunnel crap... I can still get work done messing around on the computer, because I can stop typing when I need to, and with the phone I got to wait till the conversation is completely over... Much easier to ignore the computer for an hour and get work done...
