amp getting hot to the touch....problem?

I just installed an Aura 75 W RMS x 2 amp to power my 10inch AA Assassin

Gains are set @ 50%, volume wasnt real loud, bass boost low/off, etc...

was testing it out for 20 minutes, sounded REAL clean :-D

But when i went bak to check on it, it was hot to the touch...is this normal? I am thinking maybe its a grounding problem, but i sanded it off the best i could...or do amps just get real hot after playing for 20 minutes?

Thanks to all replies

Depending on the amp in question some will get very hot to the touch (as in so hot you cannot leave your hand on it without getting at least a mild burn) and others don't get as warm. Having no experience with the Aura amps I can't say for certain but it sounds pretty normal to me. All of my Kenwood eXcelon amps get pretty warm fairly quick. Those amps (the Aura units) have thermal protection built-in so if it isn't causing it to shut off you should be okay //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/thumbsup.gif.3287b36ca96645a13a43aff531f37f02.gif

wow;....fast replies! thanks guys.....im glad it has the thermal protection....cuz that means if it gets too hot, itll shut off before a fire starts right? woot i sure hope so...

what about if it is a bad ground? i really dont want a fire...its not my car //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Youre probably fine on the heat. It will shut off, if it has thermal protection.

However, you might want to set your gain correctly, if you havent already done so.

The thermal protection circuit isn't specifically to prevent a fire but more specifically to protect the amp's internal circuitry. If the temperature inside the amplifier exceeds a preset limit (excessive heat + electrical components = bad things, generally) the protect circuit will shut the amp down and it will not operate again until the internal temp has gone back down below the trigger temperature.

iknow i should go set the gains correctly...all i need is a multimeter...and a little know how....

i know this is stupid question but what exactly is the point of going thru the gain tutorial? i am NOT saying i dont wanna do it or think i dont have to, i am just curious as to specifically what it does that helps so much

thanks again to all the help //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Gains to high = clippage. Clipping the amp is bad and will damage both the amp and the subwoofer or speaker in question....This happens when your pushing the amp beyond its limits therefore "clipping" the sound waves. Therefore follow the gain tutorial and your equipment will last.

It will ensure you will not blow your gear, but its not totally nessecary. If you know what clipping sounds like and arent overly aggressive with your equipment, a 'round about' gain setting is fine.

Heres how bored I am.... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Clipping:

Red line represents limits of your amplifier, blue line represents the sound wave with gains set to high....Green represents same wave with gains set correctly. Anything outside gets "clipped" or disappears....could get into to the details of why its bad but yeah...there was a better illustration of what im talking about, but i made my own //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I need something to do haha...

not quite, a soundwave doesnt have a peak like your drawing.. but close //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

wow....helpful...can someone call me and give me their best oral interpretation of what clipping sounds like?

You want someone to try to make the sound of clipping, vocally?
