i have a 15" IA LI and i played it pretty hard for about an hour last night and when i turned the car off i smelt it and then went to the trunk and felt the dustcap.. it was warm but not hot.. the sub is brand new and i hear many subs will have this when they are first used? (excess glue getting burned off)

amp is a hifonics 1208d wired at 2 ohms so the sub is getting 900w at the most.

whenever i beat on my subs i usually get that smell, it may not be excess glue but just GLUE, keep melting it off and have fun unspooling the voice coil from the pole lol

could be glue. or it could be clipping causing the coils to heat up more than it should.
i went to mlstrass's house last night and he said i was bottoming the sub out and possibly clipping it but we got it fixed.. i tried not to beat on it too much on the way home but today during a 5 min drive i could smell it... unless the scent was still trapped in my car from last night.. i forgot to feel the dustcap.. im gonna go for a quick 10 min drive and see if it heats up..

went around the block played 2 heavy bass rap songs.. dust cap was mildly warm.. could still smell a little bit but i think the scent is trapped in my car from last night because i smelt it right when i got in the car

its hard to tell if im hurting something and i dont wanna ruin my sub =/

If everything is right its most likely burn off....we use a ton of glue to make sure the subs don't fail so don't be surprised if the first few days there a slight smell! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Thanks,

Nick

dunno what else to say. it could be playing under tuning? bass boost? i dono..
idk i should be fine.. im only powering it with a hifonics 1200w amp wired at 2 ohms.. so 900 is rated.. and i doubt its getting rated.. the LI should be able to handle it

If he has the gain cranked and his HU all the way up and its a 2v pre out unit then he is giving well over 900w, if the amp says 900w rms at 2 ohm you know it is not the max it can do, anyone can make a 500w rms amp do 1400w clipped easily.

Tis best to measure output via DMM and trust that the amp manufacturer is correct.
