Am I going overboard

So I have a 4 door 97 F250 that I've been playing around with past 2 years. Already did all the engine work I wanted, ******, suspension work, going to the body shop here in the next few months and I'm wanting to start looking into a good sound system. I'll be the first to admit, I know little to nothing about car audio other than how to run wires, make a good splice etc.

So that being said, I put together a system on crutchfield and wanted to run it by some of you guys who are more "in the know", if you will and see if I'm missing something or if I'm going WAY overboard.

Thinking this head unit

Kenwood KDC-X998 CD receiver at Crutchfield.com

Feeding this amp

JL Audio XD400/4v2 4-channel car amplifier — 75 watts RMS x 4 at Crutchfield.com

Into these speakers

Rear JL Audio C5-570 Evolution™ C5 Series 5"x7" component speaker system — also fits 6"x8" openings at Crutchfield.com

Door JL Audio C3-600 Evolution™ C3 Series 6-1/2" convertible component speaker system at Crutchfield.com

And this sub

JL Audio 12W7AE-3 Anniversary Edition W7 Series 12" 3-ohm subwoofer at Crutchfield.com

Being pushed by this mono amp

JL Audio HD Series HD1200/1 Mono subwoofer amplifier — 1,200 watts RMS x 1 at Crutchfield.com

I'm thinking a single 12 will be good for me because I don't like an insane amount of bass like some guys do.

Any input would be great

In my opinion, jl is really just overpriced, does it sound good? Absolutely, but the same can be had without paying extra for that name. If you want to stick to a particular brand then you are going down the right path, however I just feel the same performance can be had for less money.

Overboard in price, yes. I didn't do the math, but that's a few grand easily. What are you looking for and how loud are you looking to be? Crutchfield has its customer service going for it and some decks are good value, but everything else can be either bought elsewhere for much less or just isn't worth looking at.

It's already been said, but JL is quality stuff, just too expensive. If that's what you want, by all means buy JL... But you can get just as good and save quite a bit of money.

Even if you are going to buy JL, shop around. You could possibly even get a better deal if you have a decent shop locally that would work with you on price since you're looking at quite a bit of equipment.

I'd buy a W7 used if you have your heart set on it. Btw there are MTX 9512s on sale in the classifies section, those are supposed to be really nice. Very good price as well.

W7's are very nice subwoofers if you can get one at the right price. I don't know what they go for these days but a buddy of mine paid like $700+ for a 12w7 5-6 years ago. I'd say half that would be a fair price.

I have no preference towards crutchfield, it's just a good website to build something because of the wide selection lol. My price range is $2500-3000 ideally. I'm big on amazon personally. That free 2 day shipping is pretty nice.
Threw in a few photos of the truck over the past year and a half over the span of it's "project life"
Few things:

1. You'll need to spec out the space you have to allocate for the box (net). This will dictate the woofer size and number of woofers.

2. Alternator spec for the truck?

3. Buying 2 speakers or 4? Front components will be the single most important piece of the system.

4. Deck - just do a pioneer single or double din, just make sure it has the features you want.

5. How loud do you want it?

1. It's a crew cab truck, so a pretty slim box will be needed, I've seen guys run 2 12s behind the back seat of these things, but I was going to run something like this and use the extra space to mount the amps and everything else.

Sound Ordnance™ Bass Bunker Single truck-style sealed enclosure for 12" sub (Model BB12-T) at Crutchfield.com

2. I'm about to throw in a 320amp alternator for the new warn M12000 winch I just bought, of course turbodiesel so already have two batteries.

3. That would be 4 speakers... 2 in the back, 2 in the front. IDK if you know alot about the 80-97 ford trucks but there's no where to mount more speakers other than kick panels... And to hell with that lol.

4. Again, old body style ford so has to be single den. I've ran a pioneer head unit in my last truck and hated it, ran a Kenwood in my honda, liked it alot and ran an alpine in my old truck after I ditched the pioneer. But I figured all higher end head units are about the same quality and price for the single den units (200-250).

5. Louder than I can stand. Sound is just like speed, you always want more... Told myself 500 RWHP and 950 Ft. LBS. of Tq. was enough.... It's not enough lol.

If I'm wrong, please let me know.

Did you dislike the pioneer interface or something else? They're pretty much all solid across the board. If you want that kind of loud, you should probably do a ported box and probably 2 woofers. The box will maximize the output, so make sure you get one custom built and not buy a prefab one. As for subs and just wanting loud, you can do 2 HDC312s, they're about $500 for the pair right now. In the right box on right power, it'll be impressive. Other options can be found at ssaudio.com, ficaraudio.com, ddaudio.com, b2audio.com.

Also look at these:

FU Car Audio, fu audio, fu car audio

Some people have been pretty impressed with their stuff. I'm personally a big fan of TC-sounds drivers, if you can still get them. You can do a 4kW amp. As far as speakers, are you a discerning audiophile or just someone who likes it loud and clear? You'll need a solid 4ch amp, 100wx4 at 4ohms should be plenty.
