On paper the durango might have been faster, but the armada just feels like it throws you back in the seat a little more. The lid itself it is about 16-17" from the back of the Durango. I'd go 17" to give it enough room to hinge up.

Yes, if rear seats will be folded. If not there is no room, the box would have to be on top of it. But if he will have the rear seats down, there is room for 20". You could even go up to 22-23" if you need to.
