Alternative for using rear deck for 6x9s

Is there some other way I can mount my rear 6x9s instead of mounting them in the rear deck where they are aimed 4-6" from the rear glass? You lose a lot of hi-fidelity placing them like that. Can I make boxes for them and place them on the rear deck or some other place? I have a Pontiac Sunfire.

not sure how good it does, i have personally never done it, but i have seen them in boxes on top of the deck, and also seen them fiberglassed into the rear deck facing forward, looked cool
