Alpine Type-X Vs. JLW6/W7

Let me begin by saying I SEARCHED! SEARCHED SEARCHED SEARCHED SEARCHED! I searched 'type-x' and read EVERY post!!!

Hahaha, anyways.

There was a post a few days ago about someone wanting to know how the new alpine type-x 12" stacks up against a Kicker L7, which is the exact decision i'm trying to make. Anyways, the thread ended abruptly when someone mentioned it was a stupid thread, because the type-x is designed to compete with the jl w7, and is geared to be a sql sub, rather than an all out spl sub.

So NOW i'm interested. Now that the alpine type-x has been out long enough for people to actually experience it, play with it, hear it, etc. etc. etc. and not just base opinions on the fact that the w7 is a w7 and the alpine is just an alpine, blah blah blah, i want to know how the type-x actually performs.

So anyways, here's what i want to know:

How does the type-x compare to the jlw6? The jlw7? That's all.

The subwoofer is the only thing i still need to pick for my audi. Long story short, i KNOW that i can't practically (considering my gear's been stolen before) buy a $1000 woofer let alone keep it in my car and drive downtown to school every day, so the w7 is out of the question. I want to know how the alpine type-x compares, or if it's even close to the quality of the w6 or w7, because i've heard VERY mixed reviews about them. If the alpine type-x isn't even a close rival, i will most likely go spl over the type-x, because i'd rather have a GREAT SPL sub than have to settle for a DECENT sql sub, if you can see where i'm coming from.

So objectively, and from experience, please, i want to know real experiences with the alpine type-x's, and know how they stack up against the obvious kings, and creators of SQL, the W7 and W6. I've heard all the rumors, the myths, the online bandwagon stories and reviews of both speakers, so please leave them out. I want to hear from people who have at least SEEN or HEARD both speakers!!!!

And for the record, in case anyone wants to take it into consideration for me, i have 1000rms @ 1 ohm, and 9xxrms @ 2ohms. And again, i'm not considering the w7 or w6, only wanting to know if the type-x is worthy a *opponent* to them enough to consider it rather than going all out SPL with the kicker //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

ive had a pair of 12 Type Xs

i have a 12 W7

the W7 is just overall better, but the Type X is a pretty **** good woofer.

it has excellent low-end extension, and great accuracy as well.

i kinda wish i never would have sold my pair...

What type/ size of box did you have your x's in?

And how much power did you have going to each?

It seems like everyone pretty much agrees that the highlight of the x is the low-freq. extension, but how was overall sq other than that? Were fast note changes accurate? And was there limit to the volume where the sub would stay musical?

Thanks alot for the response! Glad to hear from someone who owned one.

yea from what i hear the type X is just a UBer version of the type r.... a little more power handling and better sq and low extension.... but of course ive never heard one in a GOOD box... so i cant really confirm what i have heard from people...

Type R's handle more power

Type X's have better SQ.

i had them sealed.

SQ was excellent. even on the fast changes.

yes...the low end extension was nuts.

i had them running off a Hifonics BX2005d wired @ 1 ohm.

id say go ahead and get one.

there is an excellent review over on sounddomain.com of a IDmax 12 and a Type X 12.

hit up a W7
I'm sure the w7 is an excellent woofer, but a sub is really the only piece of hardware i can't hide, and the most identifiable to crooks...

Thanks for all the info, hotcarl, i'll definitely check out the other forum.

So where i stand right now is the type-x is definitely still in the running, i'm still going to gather as much information as i can over the next two weeks (i really need to make sure i can pay my rent before i buy anything else) and then i'll know what i want for sure.

I'll keep scouring the web for reviews, opinions, etc. etc. etc. till my eyes fall out, but if anyone else has an opinion on the x, the 6, the 7, or the solobaric, feel free to chime in. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Once again, w7 is not even a consideration. I can't afford it, and can't afford to power it. Only wondering if a type-x is a worthy enough opponent to be considered, rather than going spl with the l7.

Not knocking the w7, just being realistic.

type x, it's soooo perdy:crazy:

Fer real tho, it is supposed to be alpine's best sub, I dont see going wrong with it. Price tag is there, hell, you could get two R's and port them and get the same results.

Alright, thanks for all the opinions.

I'm pretty sure i'm going to at least give the type-x a try.

But if i could, i'd like to poke your brains one last time:

-Has anyone heard, or does anyone know, how much sq is lost with the type x wen putting it in an ideal ported enclosure vs. an ideal sealed enclosure?

AND

-Anyone care to guesstimate how much spl i'll lose with the type-x compared to an l7? And how much sq i'll lose with the type-x compared to a w7? For SPL comparison to the l7, keep in mind that the type-x only comes in a dual 4, so the type-x will only be getting 919 watts rms, while the l7 would be getting 1000 rms, since it comes in a 2 ohm configuration. If i got an l7, btw, it'd be a 15"

Sorry for all the questions, but none of the local akron alpine dealers stock or display the type-x's, and the single local jl dealer stocks w7's, but wont display them, so it's really really hard for me to get an idea of what each speaker is really like.

Thanks in advance,

Nate

Fair enough............

I've heard both good and bad about each of the subs i've talked about, but never in comparison to each other specifically.

Trying to leave technical problems/rumors/myths out of the equation and focus on the sound capabilities of each speaker.

Ok, well, I havent heard the w7 before, but I currently own the type-x. While I am underpowering it, I have to say it does awesome with fast beats, and yes, the low end on it is amazing.
