Hi there

I have an older alpine type r 1242d. I'm going to put it in my boat and a guy locally has an alpine mr 500 amp for sale @ $100. At only 500 watts rms @ 14.4 is this going to be too little wattage? i'll be listening to the radio while the engine is off and voltage probably closer to 12.2 vdc. If i go for a larger amp, say in the 750 rms range will i really be able to hear the difference? If it's wise to just bite the bullet and purchase a larger amp i have no problem doing it. I'm just trying to get this done before my trip next weekend so time is short. This is by no means a competition stereo, just making noise! i'm running a pair of massive audio ck6 stage 5 components and a pair of wetsounds xs-260 6.5's on a dsc-4125 amp as well.

Thank you so much for any help, it is much appreciated!

Brian

That amp should be fine. I'm assuming you meant MRP-M500 or something similar. A lot of people say the Type Rs can take a lot more than RMS power, but it's not worth it when you're running off battery power. It's really not even worth it to go up to 750W vs 500W because the difference is hardly even audible.

Thanks trumpet, i will buy the alpine mrp mr500 then. should i just build a sealed box for noise or play with ported? I built a ported enclosure inside my last boat but its a pain with the limited space. This boat has a lot more storage to drop a box in.
