Alpine 9886 vs 9887

It has more sound tuning features, a better crossover for active setup. and probably a couple other things.
since this thread fails i would like to say Rawr your setup gives me a boner! thank you for that splooge //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Yes it did .. thanks Rawr-DQ //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I currently have an ancient Pioneer 9650 in my car with the ib-100 and I feel the need for an upgrade. All my music is from my ipod and I rarely get to use the cd anymore.

I would like to get the x100 but since it's they don't sell 'em here yet. I have to choose between 9886 & 9887.

It's weird I love to have great audio in my car, but all I know is the basics. One thing I love about the 9650 is the auto tuning. I wouldn't know what to do with the tuning capabilities of the my current hu (much less the 9887) to be honest.

The 9887 has a solid rep and everyone knows it sounds great. The 9887 has 24bit burr brown dacs while the 9886 has 24bit dacs without the burr brown circuit. Is that really a big deal?

I guess what I really wanan know is how much better sounding the 9887 vs the 9886? Is it like night and day? Or is it something only audiophiles could distinguish? Would a properly tuned 9886 sound just as great as a 9887? Sorry for being such a pest and thanks again! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I don't know if you would truely be able to hear the difference in the DAC's except for a well trained ear of a true audiophile. However a 9887 with imprint (essentially auto tuning) should walk all over the 9886 as far as sound quality goes.

Otherwise as far as Rawr put it, thats how it is. All depends on your ultimate goals and how much install/tuning time you wish to take with your system. Even putting in a $400+ set of components and keeping the passive x-overs the 9886 would probably be your best bet. 9887 would most likely sound better especially if you are able to get the imprint kit over there too, however for simplicity sake I would assume you would be hard pressed to hear an audible difference between the 9886 and 9887, especially if 90% of your music will be compressed MP3's. Also if I am not mistaken I believe the DAC's only work on CD playback and not digital MP3 playback but I could be mistaken.

I was just asking myself this question yesterday. I have a 9883 but I've upgraded my speakers to a passive comp set. The SQ is way way better than anything I've ever had before.

I'd like to upgrade my HU to something w/ Imprint to gain the most possible SQ from my setup.

I'd also really like to upgrade both my front and sub stage amps.

I would like to replace my CDA-9807 with a CDA-9887 or CDA-9886, but I don't know if I'll be able to do that anytime soon... gotta see if I end up keeping my job since my company just got bought out. Hopefully things will go well and I can get what I want, but time will tell.

I replaced my 9833 with the 9886, and was unpleasantly surprised. I then got the PXA-H100 (look around and you can find it online for $130), and it gave back the controls that the 9833 had, that the 9886 didn't (timing adjustments, etc). Then I got the mic/software to do the imprint (another $30 or so), and it's unbelieveable. Same 2 way components I've been running for years, with the same little MRP-T220 (Alpine 2x50) amp, and I can't believe the car can sound this good. Which ever you spring for, make sure you get the imprint run. My 1990 Porsche C2 is pretty much terrible as far as speaker positioning (narrow interior, so you are touching the speakers on one side), and it is amazing (to me) that the imprint runs as well as it does.
