Aggrivation from ignorant salespersons

I had a terribly frustrating experience today at a local Future Shop where I had to exchange my subwoofers that I blew. The salesperson was determined to convince me that I blew my subs either due to a faulty amplifier, or too little power. I laughed at him and explained why this was impossible, including in my arguement clipped sine waves causing excess heat build up etc. He then told me, matter of factly, that at his store they hooked up 5000WRMS to a Kenwood 10" Tornado sub, and it took 5 minutes for it to blow! LoL. He then told me they did this by hooking it up straight to the socket from the store! Instead of countering with the obvious (hooking a sub straight up to a nice 110V AC outlet? - no mention of an amplifier on his part) I retorted with "do you know how a subwoofer functions? (albeit I learned this not too long ago) and he ignored my question and insisted I was incorrect. What a display of cognitave dissonance! From now on when I enter a store, I'll enter without talking to their "tech" help, it will save my heart grief I'm sure. I just thought it was an interesting occurance, as I'm sure quite a few of you have had to put up with before.

Indeed, Mark. Don't take NO BULL$HIT. Did he exchange your subs? My main problem is with internet companies. When dealing directly with people, you can somewhat get your point across, even if they are too stupid/hardheaded to help you. WIth these **** internet companies, it's phone tag.. or email tag. Rediculous in the worst sense. They mess with you, screw you, give you a hard time, put you on hold, don't answer emails.. etc. If there's any lesson to be learned, here is mine:

When you think you're going to buy a product via the web, (say Orion).. 1. GOTO TO THE ORION WEBPAGE

2. FIND OUT WHO THEIR AUTHORIZED DEALERS ARE

3. FIND OUT AS MUCH WARRANTEE INFO AS YOU CAN (manufacturer's? company's?)

The manufacturers know there are bogus retail companies out there. They authorize dealers they know and trust, and therefore, you can as well.

Sorry to go off subject, I'm still angry about my fried amp. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/sick.gif.b1847c8dabbfeeddbcf1a78052249e10.gif

if they ignore it that is not cool. they should at least know they dont know everything..i mean he even got the power wrong from the outlet lol..didnt take into account for box size , clipping or the fact that it is impossible to "underpower" a sub into submission. its a clip but that clip can get a 10x boost on the power side..did they take it back? did they try to come up with a solution for you if they took care of it? basically i would go to car sound .com and go to the forums and print off a few things from david navone and rc. let them argue about LAWS of electricity. you would be suprised how stupid people are (like with big caps) what is even funnier is these "shop experts" dont even fully understand ohms law.... i just sit back and think "incredible, how the hell do these idiots get their job?....sure isn't due to their haircut." i used to rep here in indiana so i saw first hand the smarts and the lack there of of stereo shops installers and salesmen....i can remember one installer/shop owner that bought kove coaxials and hooked them up to an amp...the deck was a 4 volt alpine the 4 channel amp was pioneer ...the gain was set at about 80% (ehehe) this idiot (you dont know how many times i wanted to call him this) kept blowin speakers and complained that he couldnt turn it more than half way up without the speakers dieing. no matter what i said i was wrong (he asummed part of the "expert") he blew mb quarts infinity..ect ect only thing that held together was pioneers so that was considered the best...i told him "so pioneer makes the best speaker due to the fact they have strong clipping survival capabilities?" lol he still thought and probably still thinks a gain is a volume control. (i look younger than i actually am) he told me he was installing when i was still in my mom (im older by 5 yrs than him plus i have a college background in eet) this guy didnt see the inside of a school since 6th grade imho, but then again it just goes to show u just because they are in business or even been in business for a long time doesn't mean they are an expert of anything..it just means they have patiant suppliers that bend over backwards to keep them happy and if that particular shop changes lines often it usually means they got dropped=)

So you mean to tell me I don't need to turn the gain up all the way to get full power out of my amp? lol:D And half way isn't half power? lol;)

They exchanged my subwoofers after he gave up trying to convince me about underpowering them lead to their demise. I did, however, have to raise a stink with three different people about the warranty this particular fellow sold me with the subs. I'm not one to raise a fuss, but I was getting irked by their lack of professionalism, as well as knowledge of product and customer service.

future shop = best buy canada lol right?

they ever get you into a position where u are the "bad guy" ask them in all reality what a speaker is and why they dont blow up at 1/4 volume lol or at idle hmmm. i would check your gains though:)

lol, there's a guy here. he owns one shop, so it's like a small little shop that he earns his living off of. He generally only sells Audiobahn products. Well, i don't know too much about car audio, however i do know that audiobahn doesn't make top of the line SQ products. So whenever i'm like well, i hear audiobahn doesn't have the best SQ, actually i heard it sucks, he replies saying, "well, what do you listen to? Frank Sinatra? Do you even know who frank sinatra is? At your age no one wants SQ, i wouldn't worry about SQ till you're 30 or older." There's also another shop that sells Kicker, and i asked him why i shouldn't go get some L7's instead of some 08 series or something. he goes "Kicker, you know if you look at where they're made it's in Clearwater, Oklahoma. CLEARWATER, OKLAHOMA, if you go to clearwater, Oklahoma, you mide-as-well walk of the face of this earth. Where the hell is clearwater, oklahoma? I certainly don't know!" You guys might not think it's funny, but if you were to meet this guy, and hear the way he talks //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif ...every now and then me and my friends will go in there to ask him stuff, just to get a crack out of him
