the joint says bass knob, I'm guessing it's a bass boost. It says nothing about a gain boost.

To repeat what has already been said... Kicker describes it as a 'bass level control', which is not to be confused with the single frq. band EQ called 'bass boost'. The remote knob is, in fact, a remote gain control.
