Adjusting equalizer gain

What's proper way to adjust equalizer gain if you have an amp connected? Manual says to match it with head unit output but that is vague. Turn amp gain down and adjust equalizer gain first then amp last?

i first put the eq vol to about 75% then turn the amp to the "loudest vol ull ever heer" , but depends if u are runnin speakers through ur deck.. and what ur runnin through ur amp

Turn the amp all the way up? Head unit all the way down? Can't you damage the amp? I have 50 RMS x 4 Kenwood. Then what?
