Adding 6.5" subs to the rear doors?

I'm looking at buying a pair of these JL 6.5" subs.

I already have a four channel that does 75wrms and that's what these are rated for, so it's just a matter of finding the right type of speaker for the job.

I have a set of focal comps for the front stage and a 12" type R. I feel like I am lacking some tight punchy bass. I notice it especially in rock songs. When I had the stock rear speakers in the rear doors where I plan to put the 6.5" subs, and even they added some punch that was missing.

Crutchfield says the max top mount depth for my rear doors is 2.525 and the JL's are 2 9/16 (equal to 2.6525). So I figure I'll be able to mod something to make it fit if I have to.

I just came here to ask for opinions, comments, and criticism on this idea. That's all it is at this point, so all ideas are welcome and will be contemplated!

To make them work well, a lot of install work will be needed. Pods will have to be made, baffles/boxes built around the subs, doors heavily deadened most likely.

But if you are lacking bass with a 12" sub, I doubt you will find it with those, and there is probably something wrong in your system that can be fixed much easier and cheaper. What amp do you have powering that type R? What kind of box is it in?

I have a 500wrms alpine MRX-M50 powering it. And it's in a ported box tuned to 33. I know ported isn't the best for rock, but I mostly listen to rap anyways. It just doesnt make sense to me that i miss having my STOCK rear door speakers. Like what's going on here? Ya know? There is some type of super tight, punchy bass that I'm not getting. So I thought a pair of those JL 6.5" woofers would do the job of my stock speakers, but do it even better.

Uhhhh.... I don't know. Probably midbass. Idk for sure though.

Getting that punch out of your system, especially with regard to midbass, is pretty much all about the install and EQ. ChadB has a really good snippet over on DIYMA about getting that "2x4 to the chest" kinda bass...see if you can find that for some help. He spent a lot of time tweaking the subsonic filter and EQ to get it to where he was finally happy with it.

If you don't know wtf you want, there's nothing we can do. You need to give us something to work with. What sound specifically are you lacking?

Try crossing your sub higher. A cone of a 12 inch sub is very capable of 90-100 hz, so long as it doesn't have super high inductance or something.

Yeah! 2x4 to the chest is the type of thing I'm looking for. I'll see if I can find that write up. But I'll also try crossing the sub over a bit higher. Its at 80hz on the lpf right now. Any reason NOT to xover around 90-100?

1. The sub isn't capable of handling upper frequencies at high power and could cause damage

2. Above 80Hz, it's more difficult to keep the sub from being localized (as in you can hear it coming from the trunk rather than all around you).

Just keep playing around with your crossovers and subsonic until you feel you've gotten it right

how should the subsonic be set? what should i listen for?

Not so much listen as feel. Keep tweaking until you can localize the sub and back off a bit as far as the LPF is concerned. For the subsonic, I remember 28-32Hz being the sweet spot on ChadB's thread.
